Combining all the landmarks of a former imperial capital with youthful exuberance and a markedly laid-back approach to life, this is one of those rare cities that truly has something for every visitor. Better yet, a number of fun destinations for day trips are just a short drive away. These are four of the best attractions in and around Lisbon:
- Lisbon Cathedral. One of the most notable churches in all of Portugal, Lisbon Cathedral was built in the 12th century (thus making it the oldest in the city) and has remained a symbol of the capital ever since. A mixture of Romanesque, Baroque, and Gothic styles, it stands at the location of an even older church site. The cathedral is best known for its impressive facade, but its cloister and interior are just as pleasing to look at. A short walk from the cathedral is one of the very best viewpoints in Lisbon — the Miradouro de Santa Luzia.
- Bridges. Lisbon is home to two of Europe’s most impressive bridges, a travel experience that can be enjoyed with a rental car. The Vasco da Gama Bridge, named after the famous explorer, is one of the longest in Europe, while the 25th of April Bridge, which bears the name of the date when Portugal’s last dictatorship was overthrown, has been called Europe’s answer to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Both bridges cross the Tagus river. The bridges are commuter bridges, so avoiding peak hours is a must. Both bridges are also toll bridges, so you’ll need to bring change or check if your rental supplier offers a local toll device.
- Belém. Belem is a laid-back area on the banks of Lisbon’s Tagus River. Fortifying the coastline is the 16th-century Tower of Belém, a short walk inland leading you to the UNESCO World Heritage site Jerónimos Monastery. After all that history, a wonder among Belém’s tiled houses will lead you to the original bakery, and the origin of world famous Pastel de Nata, Pastéis de Belém.
- Sintra. Situated on a mountain top overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Sintra is a World Heritage site and one of the most popular day trips from the capital. The area is known for the romanticist Pena National Palace, the impressive Moorish Castle, and other architectural wonders, beautiful parks, and nature areas. The fierce Cabo de Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, offers impressive views of the often wild Atlantic coast. The drive from Lisbon takes only about 35 minutes.

Had one bad day driving... navigation was difficult. Parking in Lisbon garage caused damage to the front bumpers because ramp was incredibly narrow. Got lost returning the car. Due to getting lost, the gas was down an 1/8 of a tank and I had to go top it off or be charged 45 euros and I was emotionally exhausted from getting lost.

We walked the lovely beaches and boardwalks of the Algarve for a month. The scenery is stunning and the long boardwalks are a joy to stroll along. We also rented bikes for two days in Quinta do Logo and had a fantastic time cycling along the waterfront.
Our last few days were
at the gorgeous palace hotel in Bossaco. We loved all the history of the former royal palace and the wooded hiking trails.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip through Portugal with a few days is Seville Spain as well. We traveled in late January and early February (2 weeks) when it was far less busy and we could make hotel reservations as we drove. The road network is very good and you can easily move around either via toll roads or non-toll roads. Taking non-toll roads allows you to experience smaller towns and some very pretty coastal and in-land scenery. In Portugal, our favourite spots were Lisbon, Sagres, the Algarve coastline, Evora, the Douro Valley, Porto and the coastal drive from Porto to Lisbon. We really enjoyed our 2 days in Seville, Spain. When we were in larger cities we looked for hotels that had parking included so we did not need to drive around as we explored the city. Many towns and cities have very narrow streets and are often one-way. You do need a navigation system or google maps (and a non driving navigator) if you are going to take this on. We would highly recommend renting a car to travel around Portugal, but parking and using public transit in larger centres (the transit systems in Lisbon and Porto are excellent). Outside the cities driving is the best way to see the country and its many historical castles, churches and towns and to tailor a trip suited to your travel preferences. If we were to return to Portugal we would definitely rent a car for traveling throughout the country and we would always travel in the off season.

We spent all but one night in the Algarve region of Southern Portugal. Every day had clear skies and bright sunshine with high temps in the low 60s. Our son did Coasteering and we hiked, took a boat trip along the coast to Benagil Cave, and visited Lagos and Sabre’s, including a kayak tour to Ponta La Piedade. We also spent one night in the center of Lisbon that was beautiful.

Other than some dicey narrow streets and roads in old , Portugal is comfortable to get around in. We used a toll road transponder to make sure that we didn't make a mistake. There are many toll roads here and it can get expensive but the convenience is immeasurable . The road trip was fun and included wineries in the Douro Valley and golf in the Algarve. The food is quite incredible and you need to try local specialties even at the risk of overdoing the calories.

Through 'DiscoverCars.com', my partner and I hired a small, recent model, fuel efficient, two-door, black Fiat. DiscoverCars is an online rental car broker but the actual supplier of our car in Lisbon was an outfit named 'Drive on Holidays.' There was a representative of the rental company at the airport (wearing an orange vest) who directed to us to a nearby waiting orange shuttle van that took us to the rental office a few minutes away housed in a orange warehouse. At the rental office there many other travelers picking up their cars so we had to wait in a long, slow moving line to get to the rental desk where we had to complete paperwork and pick up the car keys. Due to a variety of fees, charges and toll deposits, we ended up paying more than what was in the initial reservation contract with DiscoverCars.com. The car itself was in great condition. We spent 3 weeks driving around the Alentejo and Algarve and didn't experience any maintenance problems. As one who owns a vehicle with an automatic transmission the only issue I experienced was getting used to the Fiat's manual transmission. After our trip, dropping off the car back at the same 'Drive on Holidays' office was quick and easy.

I’m native from Portugal I’m not a good seller I’m confident to say to anyone o love food the taste of the seafood there’s no other the taste of fresh fish is amazing I’m not recommend name of restaurant but anyone ho have a day expend in setubal and look around Sado river where the fishing boat coming in I’m sure you enjoy the taste of the good fish there

We covered a lot of ground in Portugal from Porto to the Algarve and saw a lot. Coimbra University was a definite highlight as was Porto. Great country to visit. Cobra Cafe south of Lisbon stands out as a nice lunch stop right on the beach.

We enjoyed unseasonably warm water temperatures and swam daily throughout our trip. Wonderful beach walks along the Algarve were fabulous, while often using the Fisherman's Trail. Dining was wonderful with fresh fish and fantastic steak dinners. We plan to come back and spend an extended period of time on our next trip.

You should visit Sao Pedro do Sul and stay at Insua Hostel and enjoy the rivers, the bike tracks and the mountain climbing. Swimming in the Vouga River is just an experience you have to do on your own.

It's hard to go wrong in Portugal. But, if you're from North America and used to driving a big car on wide roads, don't have to park in spaces essentially the same width and length as your car, don't understand that the outer lane is strictly a passing lane, rarely encounter roundabouts, etc., you may want to opt for buses, trains, and taxis.

Trip was amazing. Roads are mainly bad condition and drivers are extreme. Get automatic if you can afford. Manual are really hard in European roads even for experienced drivers.
