Pros: I had a nightmare at the desk trying to get my credit card to work , I admit it was my fault because I couldn’t obtain my PIN number and there was no WiFi to obtain it , I spent a lot of time wandering around the airport to try and get a signal . I ending up using my debit card and paying a lot of money, which I need advice on . At the desk I payed £244.04, then another payment of £98.25 . This is on top of the initial car fee when booked . I want to know if you can explain the payments

Cons: The garage is a tiny overcrowded place, far too many cars for the space. I wasn’t told I had to go to the kiosk so went to my car instead. On returning to the kiosk after finding the car locked, there was no one there. I eventually was given my key but then realised two cars were parked in front of my car. 20 minutes later I found someone who reluctantly moved the cars, leaving me a tiny space to squeeze an unfamiliar car through. Overall I spent the best part of an hour getting my 🚙

Pros: This was the best hire car experience I’ve had for the cheapest price ever. To be fair the only hiccup is always trying to find where to pick-up/drop off/queue-up.. but if you’re not in a hurry it really doesn’t matter. I thoroughly recommend hiring this way.

Cons: The car wasn’t ready despite me being over an hour late to pick it up. They didn’t even know I had paid a deposit on the car. The communication between Discover cars and Goldcar was nonexistent. I got charged €32 when it was probably only €5 short of being a full tank on return, and €11 for a non existent scratch on a wheel trim. I was disappointed with the quality of service from the staff and felt that I was just being forced to sign documents that were not clear.

Cons: - the service desk was absolutely packed. I used the app to check-in and it made no difference - immediately after they took payment, I was told that there was a problem getting the cars ready because they were somehow stuck in a jam going up a ramp. Pros: The office is in the airport, easy to access.

Cons: They gave me a key and sent me to find the car in the parking. The car was not there, the employee went himself to check, didn't find the car. He gave me another key and change my booking for another car. This took a while. This car didn't have the damage paper correct and I lost some time filling in this form and waiting for the employee to check. Pros: The Car rental company was named Surprice on the email header then subsequently renamed to Goldcar on the voucher. This caused unnecessary delays as we ended up being driven into Lisbon to a company who had no car for us.

Cons: The lack of support when the vehicle would randomly not start. The company would not resolve the issue as we were not stranded, as the car would eventually start after 20 minutes or so.The boot catch was dangerously loose. The car Media system required an Authentication code after it failed to start the first time. (no radio or sat nav thereafter).

Cons: The car came with full of scratches. I cannot find a side that did not have a scratch. The initial inspection was suspicious, after it was done, I got an email with an empty inspection form. When I return the the car, I got an mysterious charge of 350 euro for a "check on rim" fee. My wife and I were very careful when we return the car, we video taped the condition of the car and did not notice any damages caused by us. I will probably have to dispute those charges with the credit company. :(

An E-Toll is offered in order to avoid violation fees.
An E-toll charge will apply; personal consumption will be charged separately at the end of the rental period.

Many highways in Portugal are tolled using only electronic means.
All rental vehicles are equipped with a transponder that can be used for paying for all toll roads.
You’ll be charged a service fee of 2.50 EUR per day up to a maximum of 21.50 EUR per rental in addition to the tolls, which will be charged to your credit card after the rental period.
You may also be required to leave an additional deposit for tolls.

The following surcharges may apply: Facility Charge.
Driver requirements
Minimum rental age is 19 years.
A Young driver fee is not applied.

There is no maximum age.
A Senior driver fee is not applied.

The driver license must have been issued by authorized authorities at least 1 year(s) before the date of the commencement of the rental.

A novice driver fee will apply to drivers who have held their driver license for less than 4 years.

A novice driver fee will apply to drivers who have held their driver license for less than 4 years.

A driver license printed using a non-Roman alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic, etc) must be supplemented by an International Driving Permit.
Customers not resident in EU countries are required to present the following document(s): International Driving Permit (IDP) in order to collect the car.
Please note that the International Driving Permit is valid only if accompanied by the regular driver license.

In addition to documents mentioned previously, the customer will need the following: valid driver license, credit card on a main drivers name, Passport or ID card, booking voucher.
Deposit and deductible policy
A deposit will be blocked on the customer's credit card and will be released within 30 days after drop-off.

A deposit for a tank of fuel is required upon collecting the vehicle.
The exact deposit is determined on pick up since the amount is dependent on the type of vehicle.

If the customer takes the following extra equipment: GPS Navigation system, Toll pass / E-toll device, then an additional amount of deposit will be held on their credit card.
Payment policy
The following payment methods are accepted: MasterCard credit card, VISA credit card.
It is possible to leave the deposit only with following methods: MasterCard credit card, VISA credit card.

American Express, Cash, Diners is/are not accepted.

The daily limit on the card used for payment must be high enough to cover the deposit. Otherwise, purchase of the following insurance policy(ies): Super Relax Cover is mandatory.

The main driver must provide a physical payment card in their name with enough funds to cover the deposit to pick up the car. The rental company will neither accept virtual credit cards (e.g., GooglePay or ApplePay) nor someone else’s card (including family members).
Cross-border policy
Cross border rentals are allowed only upon previous request.

Using a ferry is allowed on the previous request and for an additional charge with special permission from the car rental company.

Details are available from the car rental company's reservation office.
In the event that Cross Border & Territorial Restrictions are violated, all protections lose their validity.
Optional extras and services
Available special equipment: Baby seat (up to 1 year of age), Child seat (2-4 years of age), Booster seat (4-10 years of age), Toll pass / E-toll device.

Adding additional drivers is allowed.
There is an additional charge for each driver.
When picking up the vehicle, all drivers must be present and must provide valid documentation.

Optional extras are subject to the following additional charge(s): Premium Location surcharge, Airport Surcharge.
Delivery/Collection service is available only by previous request.
Fuel policy
The vehicle is provided with a full tank of fuel and must be returned with the same amount in order to avoid additional charges.
A deposit for a tank of fuel is required upon pick up.
Diesel vehicles are available only by request upon arrival.
Diesel vehicles are available for an additional charge.
Additional information
Winter tires are not mandatory in Portugal.
Snow chains are recommended in icy/snowy conditions, especially when traveling in mountainous areas.
Rental period
The maximum rental period per agreement is 28 days.
If the renter would like to extend the rental period, renter should return to the car hire office at the end of the rental period to sign a new agreement.
Business hours
The supplier will hold the vehicle for 6 hours after your scheduled pick-up time as long as it is within their normal business hours. After this time, your booking may be canceled without refund.
If the customer is late for a return for more than 59 minutes, extra day charges will apply, in addition to any other rental charges.
