  • Cocoa Beach: One of the closest beaches, Cocoa is only an hour away from Orlando along a straight shot to the east. Aside from taking in the sun on the gorgeous beach, you can visit the largest surf shop in the world, Ron Jon’s Surf Shop, and then hit the waves. It is also near Cape Canaveral, so you can go before or after visiting Kenedy Space Center. 
  • Canaveral National Seashore: To experience a slice of paradise, the Canaveral National Seashore is the place to go. Just a little further from Orlando, it is a pristine shoreline just waiting for you. It’s also the perfect place to watch rockets launch from Kenedy Space Center. Keep in mind that it takes a little longer to reach than the Space Center itself as you have to make a bit of a circle. 
  • Daytona Beach: Famous for the Daytona 500, Daytona Beach is a great place to go even when there isn’t a race. Perhaps the most unique experience it offers is the ability to drive and park right on the beach. The city is well-known for its party atmosphere, and may, therefore, not be the best destination if you seek a peaceful day at the beach. But if you want to enjoy life in a lively manner, you shouldn’t miss Daytona.

Main airlines

Southwest Airlines carries the most passengers at MCO. It flies to many destinations across the United States. Delta Air Lines provides many connections every day to Atlanta, its major hub. American Airlines has many connections per day to its hub Miami International. The low-cost carriers JetBlue and Spirit round out the most popular airlines serving Orlando International. There are also many international flights provided by many different airlines.

Terminals

The two passenger terminals (A and B) are in the same building, Terminal A on the north side and Terminal B on the south side. Terminal A is connected to Airsides 1 and 2, and Terminal B is connected to Airsides 3 and 4. South Airport Intermodal Terminal is currently under construction.

Location

Orlando Airport is 6 miles (10 km) southeast of downtown Orlando and roughly 20 miles (32km) from Disney World.

Note that the most direct way to reach the Disney World or Universal Orlando areas from the airport is the Martin Andersen Beachline Expressway (or, alternatively, the Central Florida GreeneWay in the case of Disney World). Both of these are toll roads.

Be aware that although it is possible to pay the toll with cash, most low-cost rental companies have a toll sticker placed in their cars that can neither be removed nor turned off. These stickers will register an electronic toll payment even if you use one of the cash lanes. If you were to decline purchasing the rental company’s toll package, you would receive hefty fines for this. The alternative is to avoid the toll roads though this will usually add time to your trip.

Services and facilities

You’ll find countless shops, bars, and restaurants. There are also lounges, an airport hotel, a lost and found office, ATMs, and a pet relief area. The airport is friendly to travelers with reduced mobility. You can find more information on the airport's official website.

Nearest gas station

While there are gas stations next to Orlando Airport, they’re known for charging very high prices. So it’s a better idea to fill up your tank at one of the many gas stations within the city of Orlando or at any station not close to the airport.

If you are seeking to return your rental car with a full tank of fuel, DO NOT stop at either of the gas stations closest to the airport, Suncoast Energys or Sun Gas. If you fill up at either station, you will pay at least twice the normal price. The Wawa, 7-11, and Mobil stations one or two blocks north offer competitive prices. These stations all work for both renters returning cars to on-airport locations and those returning cars to most off-airport locations.

Ace, Green Motion, and Routes are all located on Narcossee Road. At the exit from the Martin Andersen Beachline Expressway, there is a 7-Eleven on the south side of the highway. There is also a 7-Eleven at the intersection of Narcossee Road and Lee Vista Blvd. north of the rental locations. Avoid the BP station north of the Martin Andersen Beachline Expressway as its prices are significantly higher.

Will my European driving license be accepted or do I need to carry an international driving permit?
All driver licenses written in English are accepted. If the customer’s driving license is not written in English, the customer probably needs to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP). Can I pick up the car after 10:00 pm?
Yes, It is possible to pick up a car after 10 pm at Orlando Int. Airport. Some car rentals are open until 12:00 am. Florida is a unique experience. We did a ton of driving across the state, but the vegetation is so thick and the state so flat it’s hard to see most of it. The nature was incredible, made for great photos. Unfortunately, most of the service industry felt rude and unwelcoming at best. The standard of cleanliness in a few hotels rooms was disappointing. As a traveler relying on ratings is really important and I definitely feel some were rated higher than they deserve. December weather was great though, 80 degrees average. Warm days, cool nights.

We started our holiday in Orlando visiting the famous Universal Studios and Disney parks. We then drove on down to Miami and stayed on South Beach for a couple of nights. We then headed right down to Key West, spending a night in Islamorada and Marathon on the way. We then travelled back up stopping off at the Everglades before spending a night in the gorgeous Naples and our final night was spent in Tampa before driving back to Orlando International Airport to fly back home to England.

I was skeptical when i first booked from Zezgo because the price seemed so much lower than their competitors and i have never heard of the company but i was very pleasantly surprised when i arrived to pick up the rental. My car had less than 100 miles on it and the check-in and check-out were very fast. Also, getting picked up from the airport only took a few minutes from when i called to let them know i was waiting.

Disney Springs was big fun because it's free to get into, the kids can touch everything in stores, there are many cool Lego sculptures and things to climb on for amazing pictures, the Rainforest Cafe is super fun and very yummy and it's all open until 11pm!!! We had a great overall experience renting a mini can! The price was hands-down the lowest, and the pickup/drop off process was efficient, even though the rental location was not at the airport (about 10 minute drive). They provided a complimentary shuttle that continuously goes back and forth to the rental car location.

Unless you less than 15 min away from your hotel to your daily destination, a car is more convenient than rideshares, but you do have to account for parking fees at the themeparks. I was able to avoid tolls as I'm familiar with the area, just be careful to bring change and small bills.

Orlando was a great first-time experience. As far as "recommending renting a car in Orlando", you have to rent one when you are done there. However, do your FULL research BEFORE renting a vehicle. I thought that I would save money by going through ROUTES but it ended up costing me the same, if not more than the competitors. No deal there! I highly doubt that I would rent from ROUTES again!

Be prepared for longer drives to avoid the tolls. The toll road rental piece is a LOT more than the actual tolls, but without it you are waiting to pay tolls (causing a longer time anyway). It is very possible to avoid the tolls all around Orlando with the correct setting in your phone. Uber/Lyft are readily available and very affordable

We liked renting in Orlando, the downfall is the tolls in Orlando. We did not get the SunPass as we stayed near the resort. But driving to the airport back, we had like 5 tolls within 30 min drive totaling probably around $7, but for some you had to have exact change and there was no cashier. We used up all of the change we had, if we had one more toll we would’ve been in trouble

It is good to have a car in Orlando in order to get to the various attractions and not be stuck in one place. Economy rental car was fine, but my reservation was via a 3rd party of some sort- confusing to me and very awkward. When I needed to adjust the pick up time on the reservation I had to deal with voicemail hell for long periods and then cancel and re-order rather than adjust the reservation. Very painful and time consuming.

If you already have car insurance and/or AAA, check with them to see if it is necessary to purchase the insurance from the car rental. Find out in advance where the shuttle picks you up from the airport. Plan your route ahead of time. If you aren't going on the Florida Highway that uses a SunPass right away, pick up a cheaper pass at the supermarket, or avoid those toll roads (btw 528 is a toll route, but has cash options to the right of the tolls.)

We've been there twice. The first time we rented right at the airport which I thought was a lot easier and more convenient. The second time, the rental car place was offsite and we had to wait for the shuttle to bring us to the rental car place and then go through hoops there. It was exhausting after traveling. Then when we returned the car, my husband had to get an Uber to bring him to our hotel near the airport. Next time we might rent right at the airport again for convenience.

Orlando is urban sprawl. If you're going to Disney only or Universal only you won't need a car. If you want to leave the property and go between them you'll need a vehicle or be willing to pay for a taxi or uber/lyft as they are intentionally designed to not have good transportation between competing properties.
