Located near the sizable city of the same name, Faro Airport is the main gateway to the Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region. Known for its beautiful beaches and scenic coastal towns, but also fascinating history, the Algarve is one of the gems of this part of Europe. These are three of the most popular attractions of the region:

  • Albufeira. The Algarve might have the highest proportion of picturesque and laid back beach towns anywhere in Europe, and among them, Albufeira Albufeira is one of the most popular. Incredible Atlantic beaches along the entire coastline give you ample choice of where to soak up the sun, or take up water sports. Albufeira has a twin personality split between its nightlife mecca strip and ‘new town’ and its slightly more llaid-backhistoric old town. Hidden in its old town, you’ll find traditional fish restaurants, churches, and the Archaeological Museum sharing the history of Albufeira’s Roman and Moorish past. 
  • Inland. Much more sparsely populated and less explored than the coastal part, the Algarve’s inland is usually overlooked by travelers. But give it a chance and you’ll find a fascinating destination that offers everything from majestic (yet accessible) peaks to traditional villages, spas dating back for millennia and stunning views of the ocean below. Unfortunately, during the recent decade the Algarve’s forested laid-backinterior has suffered from sporadic wildfires in its eucalyptus forests, so make sure to check the wildfire forecast if you’re visiting during the warmer half of the year.
  • Portimão. The second-largest city of the Algarve, Portimão is also something of the region’s culinary capital, especially when it comes to seafood coming straight out of the Atlantic. The prime attraction of Portimão is its beach resort of Praia da Rocha, offering the biggest and most expensive stretches of sand in this part of the Algarve. In Portimão’s harbour, you’ll find boat trips to go dolphin watching or explore the caves and coves of the rocky coastline. Portimão is on the way from Faro to Albufeira and Lagos.

  • Alvor (75 km / 46 mi) This former fishing village is now a popular resort on the doorstep of a lagoon. The lagoon offers calm bathing waters and an exceptional place to practice wind and water sports. In its small harbour, you’ll find tour operators offering thrilling powerboat rides, or relaxing trips exploring the Algarve coastline. With a rich fishing heritage that continues to this day, you’ll find some of the best fish restaurants in the Algarve!
  • Armacao de Pera (52 km / 32 mi). A historic fishing village, Armacao attracts thousands of visitors every summer thanks to its beautiful coastline and accessible beaches. Many quality seaside restaurants are open every summer.
  • Portimao (71 km / 44 mi). The second city of Algarve, Portimao is a fun travel destination. Like other places in the region, it is home to beautiful beaches, some well-preserved architecture, and laid back atmosphere. From Portimao, you can also easily access Monchique, one of the most interesting inland destinations of Algarve.

Portugal is beautiful. Beaches are too busy. Restaurants are good but expensive for the Canadian exchange. Airbnb is very expensive for what you get. Some items in grocery stores are reasonably priced but because the Canadian dollar is so low to the euro everything is too expensive from rent to car fuel.

We stayed at Boavista golf and spa about 8 minutes drive from Lagos.A car is necessary at this location but the location is superb. Visited Albufeira and Villamoura and would advise you check sunset time and go out to Sagres be there 15 minutes early and watch the beautiful sunset from the cliff tops The fort is at this point also which closes at 5.00pm . Combine the two there is a restaurant we didn't visit due to time schedule nearby. Beautiful beaches in the nearby areas of Lagos. Mostly the staff of restaurants helpful and professional but not quite as friendly in the way Spanish restaurants staff are . That's Just a point that we had shared in conversation with surprisingly! Portuguese people themselves not meant to be in any way detrimental just as an observation but certainly not by way of a complaint. Very happy with everything we experienced

We traveled almost whole south of Portugal - cities and a lot of beaches. It was thanks to borrowed car. One day we rented paddleboards to see Benagil cave. There was a lot of people but it was worth it! I hightly recommen to rent a car, because then you can see a beauty of the Algarve.

There is a shuttle transfer from the airport to the car rental place. The transfer pick up location was not clear as where to be picked up. We also booked a fiat 500 or similar and we got a fiat panda. The car was fine but I would believe the similar is what to expect.

Love the coastline and the many villages we toured. Western coast is fabulous with many hidden beaches. Took a boat tour of the coast and the caves, spectacular. Did an overnight trip to Evora and enjoyed the history and touring the city. Stayed in a great place in Albufeira for the month of March and then moved to Olhao for a week in April. Loved both places. Everything was within walking distance. Great restaurants and some amazing wines. Even though prices are rising and there are more tourists all the time, still a great place to go for a reasonable price.

Definitely recommend a smaller vehicle for parking and fuel economy. We drove along the coast in Spain, visited small towns and the big ones too. It takes an iron will to drive into the big cities (Seville, Lisbon etc.) The traffic circles are very efficient at moving traffic but a little intimidating If you are new to the area. Luckily I had a co-pilot giving me directions otherwise it would have been much more complicated. We parked the car as much as possible and used Uber to get around town and I highly recommend doing the same.

Outside of the largest cities, Portugual is very easy and a joy to navigate. You just need to master the etiquette of the roundabout, be polite and watch out for pedestrians, bikes, scooters, etc. The toll-ways have very little traffic and provide great value-for-money.

We went to Tavira, a lovely place with a wonderful beach that is reached by ferry. Than Lagos, beautifull as well but a bit too touristic and we spent the last few days in Far. Portimao was nice to visit and have lunch, just a short drive from Carvoeiro were we stayed. Lisbon is a nice town well worth a visit, but the drive, 290 Km, on the A2 is not very interesting. From Algarve it is 22 € each way in fares. There is a 120 km/h speed limit but the Portuguese cars are much faster! Albufeira is nice town to visit, as is Faro (if you enjoy British people that are loud and drunk). Spending a month golfing, a car is a must and give you the freedom to see and experience Portugal.

I drove along the whole south coast of Portugal that is really easy and fast to arrive any place. Free parkings everywhere. the scenery in the Algave is beautiful, but the best places are the ones which are only reachable by car. shopping is a lot easier by car, there are so many shopping centres, with supermarkets, and numerous shopping malls. Explore the little villages of the beaten track, where you will find the cobbled streets and little tavernas where the local people enjoy a cup of coffee and enjoy the sunshine. The easiest way of renting a car is at the airport, avoid the motorways,( which you have to pay for ) by using the N roads. and just enjoy yourself by being independent.

Shop around. I live in the Algarve and always rent as buying is expensive. Winter rates are fantastic and I have paid as little as €100 for 30 days rental (with Hertz ! Believe it or not). Always check car thoroughly and take photos of any dents etc. Try to get long term rental is difficult, but then by doing so you can miss out on deals. You get what you pay for, so it is nearly always better value to get a not so good car at a great rate and accept that it may not have all the new onboard technology. Get and pay toll transponder in advance. The A22 motorway tolls are not expensive and it is the best and safest way to see the Algarve. Love Drive on holidays for cars and value.

I live in the Algarve and have been using Faro Airport car rental for about one year now. I would like to book a long term rental, but can only hire a car for one month at a time. However, this allows me to shop around on the internet for the best deals from agents like 'Discover'. The off peak months from September are fantastic for prices and upgrades. Last January I got a brand new (only 7 miles on the clock) Citroen C3 from Hertz which cost €80.00 for 30 days hire. I have had similar deals from other hirers, so the winter months are great value if you shop around. Summer deals are not so good, plus you can expect delays, due to tourist demand at car hire depots. My favourite hire company is 'Drive on Holidays' whose staff are always helpful and friendly. Obviously top band companies like Hertz and Europecar are also good to deal with. I have only had one bad experience amd that was with a 'Centauro' whose depot is about 4 miles from the airport and whose staff are rude and dismissive. The car I got from them was filthy, full of large dents and had the engine management light on for most of the hire period. Customer services never answer phone calls or e mails, so the only help I got was on their Facebook page. All in all though Faro Airport is a great place to hire a car and I would recommend it to anyone visiting, or even (like me) living here.

We stayed in Lagos which is about an hours drive on the motorway from Faro airport. Although it's a toll road, the charges are very low and the motorway is very quiet. Its much quicker than using the adjacent coast road. Lagos is a lovely resort with great beaches and scenery. It provides great access to the coastline to the westerly point & is a good place for exploring the Algarve.

Lovely place with lots of local beaches and lovely resorts just a stones throw from the airport in faro. Big shopping area so you won't be bored of things to do here.

Painless and easy completion of the rental agreement. Easy to find the office at faro airport without having to walk long distances. The return of the vehicle was so quick, the lovely female agent notice us pulling in to the car park and met us at the vehicle. Vehicle checked back in with no issues (some rental companies try it on with imaginary problems!). My first time in Portugal and loved the country and the friendliness of all the locals, my first time renting a car too so the overall experience was first class. Will definitely be returning to Portugal, have even started looking for next year! And will definitely rent from here again!!

Best value cars are off terminal. Some are quite remote and difficult to return to. Public transport in the region is not good so a car is a good idea. Taxi's can be expensive if you are more than 30 minutes from the airport so a car is a cheaper option, especially outside high season

I regularly visit the Algarve and pick a car up at Faro airport, I normally stay in Alvor a small resort near Portimao which is ideal for a quieter holiday, it has an excellant Boardwalk which runs the lenghth of the long beach into town, A rental car gives you the flexiblity to vist some of the other towns on the algarve Monchique in the mountains is a favourite of mine

We stayed in Carvoeiro with friends. Lovely small town with excellent bars and restaurants. Friendly atmosphere. Good range of accommodation. if you like walking there are plenty beautiful walks. Town is accessible to walk to if you are not in the town centre.
