The main city of northern Portugal, Porto is also one of the country’s most famous travel destinations. Located at the point where the Douro river meets the Atlantic Ocean, this large, but cozy, city is a hub of history, culture, and cuisine, and also offers access to the rest of Portugal’s scenic north. Below are five of the most notable landmarks in and around it — you can use the following guide to find more things to do and see if you only have one day in Porto.
- Stock Exchange Palace. One of the most famous buildings in the city, you will probably recognize the Palácio da Bolsa from postcards or travel videos. Although relatively new as it was only built in the 19th century, the building’s central location, unique architecture, and diverse interior are what give it its fame. The palace is just a stone’s throw away from Porto Cathedral and the Church of St. Francis, two of the city’s most important religious buildings.
- Livraia Lello. 140 years old as of 2021, this bookstore has often been recognized as one of the most beautiful in the world. The chief reason for its fame is the beautiful interior that includes a spiral staircase, as well as, naturally, a great collection of books. Visit the bookstore’s interactive website to learn more. If you liked Livraia Lello, you will probably also enjoy visiting Almeida Garrett Library which is only a ten-minute drive to the northwest.
- Peneda-Gerês National Park. The oldest nature preserve in Portugal, Peneda-Gerês is arguably also its most impressive one. A scenic area that is great for hiking and is also known for its many historical landmarks, the park is home to wildlife such as Garrano wild horses, gold-striped salamanders, Iberian ibex, and red-backed shrikes. The drive from Porto to the national park takes only about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
- Dom Luís I Bridge. This famous bridge connects the Douro River with Vila Nova de Gaia... a place where you will find many port wine cellars and history. The bridge was completed in 1886 and is 272 meters long (894 feet). It offers some of the most epic views of the city.
- New Port Wine Museum. Characteristic of the Douro Valley, the world-famous port wine museum is one of the symbols of Porto. The right place to learn about the fortified wine’s origins, history, and cultural importance is the New Port Wine Museum (the ‘new’ part in the name comes from it having changed locations in 2019 – it can now be found in a renovated, historical warehouse near Douro River).

We covered 1500 kilometres in 8 days. We covered from Braga,Douro valley, Coimbra, Nazare and various sites in Central Portugal, Evora and the Algarve. We returned the car in Lisbon. We were collected by the shuttle bus at Porto airport and taken straight to the car-hire office. The car we received was brand new and very clean. We expected to have to pay cash for the hire but they took the money off of a credit card along with the £1500 deposit, £100 deposit for fuel and the same for tolls. All was refunded once we returned the car with a full tank and no damage minus what we had spent on toll roads. A few days in the mountains followed by four in Porto city was fantastic as our first family holiday abroad in 15 years.

Best way to see Portugual was by car. People, food & places we visited were great. Using google maps while driving made all the difference in not getting lost, but should have obtained a map of Portugual to better map out where we were going. Great driving toll roads, but watch out for drivers in the fast lane. Best not to drive in the city centers as roads can be pretty harrowing & street names are not always visable. Easier to use metro or trains in the city.

Book the car early especially if you drive automatic. There aren’t that many options. You should get the V green if you plan to use the highways. Enjoy the views. I recommend driving through the towns and using the nation roads. You get the best views.

We stayed in a rural AirBNB and needed the car to get around. The buses in that part of the town are not very frequent and taking a car means you have full flexibility and save lots of time. It also means you can do what you want when you want to!

Depending on where you plan to visit - go for a mini or at least a medium sized car. Driving any car out in the open or on main roads is not problematic at all, but be aware that some urban areas have really tight streets. It's also easier to find parking space in cities with a smaller car.

In General I find full insurance of cars very expensive and this goes for all rental companies in Portugal total of 9 I have used.
We normally travel from North to South and East to West every year looking for a new adventure never had issues with car rental companies besides delivery times, but then again I must get used to the portuguese way of time.
Always had great meals and excellent wines to drink you can never complain that there was not enough to eat.Besides there are lots of restaurants for every type of wallet.
Portugal value for money and the people are fantastic

AVEIRO, COSTA NOVA,FATIMA, PORTO, AGUEDA and surrounding areas on advise of a friend we took train to Lisbon and I think it was good choice based on the narrow streets and steep streets that rental would most likely got some dents and scratches

Porto is a beautiful city with many stunning view points. Food And drinks are generally cheap through the country. Many bars and restaurants, and the people are helpful and polite. Love the city, it’s history and culture.

We didn’t drive in Porto. I think with it’s narrow, old streets that might be stressful. We headed north east to Soajo, which was pretty easy driving on mainly quiet motorways.

Things which are not told by every company is... When you arrive at the airport, you either need to find a representative of the car hire company in the airport, or go out through the main exit door to find a mini bus with the name of the car hire company (PRIMARY OPTION), which then will take you to the location where you will collect your car. Once you know this, the whole experience of collecting the car will go quicker and smoother.

Porto is a beautiful city, but difficult to get around in because of many one-way streets, and not very many street signs. Definitely get a GPS, or use the one on your cell phone.

On first getting to Portugal we wanted a place that was easy to get out of airport and city and Porto fit the bill. Spent a few days north of city ( Viana do Castelo) in less populated area to get acclimatized and used to driving and then set out on northern Portugal exploration. Worked well for us so that by the time we had toured around and got to Lisbon we were ready for increased traffic.

There are many rental agencies at the airport. There are also other rental agencies within walking distance that charge substantially less than at the airport. Porto is a great ciy to visit.
