From ancient landmarks to medieval gems and the modern art scene, the city has something for every visitor to enjoy. These are three of the city’s most notable landmarks:

  • The Acropolis. The heart of old Athens, the Acropolis is naturally the most visited place in the city. In addition to landmarks like Parthenon, many notable sites are also located around the Acropolis and can be conveniently visited during the same visit. The Acropolis is in the center of town, just a ten-minute walk or a five-minute drive away from Syntagma Square.
  • The Museum of Ancient Greek Technology. As could be expected, Athens is home to a number of museums dedicated to the ancient Hellenic world. While not as large and immediately impressive as some others, this little cultural institution dedicated to the inventive genius of the ancient inhabitants of the area is one of the most interesting. Divided into three sections, the museum explores Ancient Greek technology, as well as the unusual musical instruments that were popular at the time.
  • Kaisariani Monastery. Another historically important place, but dating to significantly more recent times, this monastery was built at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries when the area was ruled by the Byzantines. Despite being more than 900 years old, it continues to perform its original function and is open for worshippers and visitors alike. The monastery is located in a beautiful place on the foothills of Mount Hymettus and is surrounded by a vast green area that is a popular destination for walks. The drive from the city center takes 30 to 40 minutes.
  • The Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus. The Ancient Agora was the main civic center in Ancient Greece. Philosophers like Socrates and Plato would walk through the streets and markets, sharing wisdom with everyone they encountered. Look out for the Stoa of Attalos, a colonnaded marketplace once home to over 40 stores that today houses the Agora Museum. The Temple of Hephaestus was built around the same time as the Parthenon (450 BC) and had a similar design. It is dedicated to Hephaestus, God of Fire, and Athena Ergane, Goddess of Pottery and Crafts.

Avance at Athens are pick up from the Airport. While you can get a cheaper deal if you go off site with a shuttle bus, this adds time waiting for shuttle buses and the cars are usually in poorer condition and there's much more of a chance you'll be asked to pay for damage already on the car.

Pros: Good value. Low price for a decent rental in overall good condition that made my trip possible without problems. Friendly and efficient rental staff. Cons: Rental was advertised as full-to-full but ended up same-to-same with 2/8 fuel on pick-up (gas is expensive in Greece!). Rental car was also a little outdated and not in pristine conditions (but clean interior). There was also just water instead of windshield wiper fluid. Rental location is also a little far away from airport, although the shuttle was easy to catch and got me to and from the airport without problems. Overall: You get what you pay for. I had a very good price and got a car that 100% got the job done, even if it wasn't the nicest rental car ever, with some corners cut on the overall rental experience. Friendly and efficient staff helped overlook the cut corners. Good rental agency for anyone who doesn't need anything fancy from the rental experience.

Travellers should visit Acropolis and the new history museum before climbing up to Acropolis. Also the Niarchos national gallery next to Hilton Hotel. Finally walk from Syntagma square to Ermou Street, see the Monastiraki fleet market and proceed to Psyri area and sit in one of its beautiful Cafes. For food return back to Monastiraki area and sit in one of the many restaurants serving kebabs and souvlaki preceded by Greek salad with fetta and olives and of course tomatoes and cucambers and with Greek with extra virgin oil for dressing. Plaka area is also very interesting.

Had a great trip to Greece where I was doing a half Ironman on the Costa Navarino. Hiring a car was perfect as I had lots of stuff including a big bike box, and it gave me flexibility and independence. Greek people are just so friendly, from hotel staff to local restaurants. I wouldn't rent a car to visit the city of Athens, since public transport is convenient and affordable (and much less hassle than driving in traffic). On the other hand, we rented a car to drive around Greece, and it was well worth it: long distance trains or coaches are a real pain and a difficult maze to navigate (especially if you don't speak Greek).
