Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades islands in Greece, and it’s located in the Aegean Sea. It is a destination known for its stunning coastline, picturesque villages, fantastic food, and rich history and culture. Despite its increasing popularity, Naxos is a destination that caters to all types of travelers, whether they seek relaxation, adventure, or cultural experiences. These are four suggestions for interesting places to visit during your trip:

• Naxos Town. The capital and port town of the island, Naxos Town, also known as Chora, is a charming town with a historic castle-like appearance, narrow alleys, and a bustling harbor. Visitors can explore the stone-paved streets, lined with restaurants, cafes, shops, and artisanal workshops selling handmade textiles, pottery, and jewelry. The town is mostly famous for its Kastro district, a picturesque, fortified medieval area.
• Beaches. Naxos is famous for its long stretches of golden sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and breathtaking sunsets. Some of the most popular beaches in Naxos include Agios Georgios, Agia Anna and Agios Prokopios, which are all south of Naxos Town, on the west coast of the island. Visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports, such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, or paddleboarding, or simply relax under the sun. The further south you go, the quieter it gets. The most remote beaches can be found on the east coast of Naxos.
• Apollo’s Temple. Located in Chora, the entrance to the Apollo’s Temple, known in Greek as Portara, is arguably the island’s most famous landmark and features in most promotional videos of the island. More than 2,500 years old, the stunning marble gate is all that remains of the ancient place of worship.
• Apirantos. Like many Greek islands, Naxos, despite its small size, has a rugged interior with surprisingly dramatic peaks. One of the best places from where to explore this lesser known side of Naxos is Aspirantos, a mountain village and a fine destination in its own right thanks to its three small, but charming museums and well-preserved regional folklore. A car trip east of Chora takes about 40 minutes.

Location

Naxos Airport is about 3.5 km (2.2 mi) south of Naxos Town, the main settlement on Naxos Island. Andrea Papandreou Street, is the main road connecting the airport to town. Note that parking is not permitted inside the historical center of the town.

Services and facilities

Although Naxos Airport is really small, you’ll find a snack bar, a shop, and an ATM. Travelers with reduced mobility should contact their airline in advance to find out about the help they can receive at the airport. Keep in mind that the airport’s opening and closing times differ from one day to the next, so it’s best to check in advance.

Nearest gas station

EKO gas station at Ag. Prokopios 843 00 can be reached in about five minutes and is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. There are other gas stations near Naxos Airport and on the island. If you want to explore the east/southeast coast of Naxos, make sure you get fuel in advance.
