Airport travel guide

Part of the so-called Cycladic archipelago, Syros is as scenic and historic a Greek island as any, but with the added caveat of being relatively close to the mainland. Less crowded than nearby Mykonos, it has all the ingredients for a tranquil beach holiday. These are some of its most notable experiences, towns, and attractions:
- Ermoupoli. Located on the eastern coast, Ermoupoli is the main settlement on Syros — about 70% of the island’s inhabitants live here. A good place to explore the rest of the island from, it is also home to attractions such as the Apollo Theater, Industrial Museum, and several impressive churches.
- Galissas. Nowadays a quiet village, little Galissas has been inhabited since prehistory and was an important center of learning during the early days of Greek philosophy. Some ancient ruins remain in the area, making this a popular tourist spot. Located on the western coast, Galissas is only a 15-minute drive from Ermoupoli.
- Ano Syros. This is a captivating 13th-century Venetian settlement that serves as the Roman Catholic quarter on Syros island. Explore hidden corners with ornate doors, vibrant balconies, and serene spots. It is home to Agios Giorgios, a hilltop Catholic church offering stunning views. Take advantage of the small museum honoring famous rebetiko musician Markos Vamvakaris, who was born in Ano Syros.
- Kini. This picturesque village on Syros island's west side is renowned for its fish restaurants and Greek tourism influx during peak months. Discover its sandy beach, lovely promenade, and poignant sea memorial. Tourists can explore secluded beaches by boat or watch the sunset.
- Beaches. More or less all of Syros is blessed with a scenic and accessible coastline, but, according to many visitors, many of the nicest beaches are situated along the central portion of the aforementioned western coast — from Delfini in the north to Poseidonia in the south. Needless to say, all of these beaches can be quickly reached from anywhere else on the island.
- Tinos. A neighboring island of Syros that’s connected to it by a frequent hydrofoil service (itself a fun experience!), Tinos is about twice bigger in terms of territory, but about two times smaller in terms of population. That means the island is the right place for a truly relaxing time on the beach, as well as a great hiking destination (the total length of its well-maintained trail network is about 150 km or 93 miles). The island is also famous for Panagia Evangelistria or Our Lady of Tinos Cathedral, which is a popular pilgrimage destination. Tinos is northeast of Syros, the hydrofoil trip taking only 40 minutes, and while you cannot bring a rental car with you, you can get around by bus, taxi, or on foot, or even rent a new car for your time on the island.
- Greek and Aegean cuisine. Syros, a stunning Greek island in the Aegean Sea, boasts a captivating culinary scene. Discover the rich flavors of Greek and Aegean cuisines with delightful specialties including Loukoumi, a sweet treat perfect with coffee. Delight in the tantalizing taste of perfectly grilled gyros and souvlaki served on warm pita bread with flavorful toppings. Experience the essence of Greece on every plate on Syros.
