Magic Islands Rent a Car at Madeira Funchal Airport

Pros: I’ve always been skeptical about renting cars, but this agency didn’t disappoint. Absolutely loved renting a car here. Brand new car, crazy speed at pickup and drop off and very cheap.

Cons: The car was dirty when I picked up and I returned it in the same condition, yet the agents tried to charge me a cleaning fee, which I found ridiculous. The car we received had multiple old scratches and I dropped it off, they pointed a few visible old scratches (rusty), which were not marked in the sheet. Luckily, I had a video and I was able to prove that the scratches were there when they gave me the car, despite not being marked on their sheet.

They charged €1,500 to my card, which was supposed to be only a temporary hold, not an actual charge. I received no communication or explanation from them. There are more than 15 days since i droped the car, full tank, without damages (confirmed in their report), but didn’t received my money back. Since they are asking for credit card, it’s enough to pre-authorize the deposit, not to charge it. One small minus would be that their location isn't in the Funchal airport, and you need to take Magic Islands shuttle to get there when you pick up your car, and then back to the airport after your drop off. However, it was a quick trip - 10/15min. Another small minus is that our car had quite a few pre-existing scratches and other damage to the exterior.

As I did not feel comfortable with automatic transmission, they exchanged the car for one with manual transmission next day. Their phone line worked and the employees spoke well English. The employees could be trusted. Their price was slightly lower than the one offered by competitors.
