Not having any type of dissatisfaction with Discovery Cars, I hereby come to speak out and express my total disgust with the Magic Islands employee (Alex) who attacked, mistreated and humiliated us.  Until the momen I have not yet received the refund of the deposit I made on December 15, 2023.

Pros: They gave us a great car at pick-up, an upgrade compared to what we booked. As I did not feel comfortable with automatic transmission, they exchanged the car for one with manual transmission next day. Their phone line worked and the employees spoke well English. The employees could be trusted. Their price was slightly lower than the one offered by competitors.

Cons: They do not have a rental office at the airport so you need to call them when you arrive. Also drop-off could be a bit longer, as they need to come to the airport.

Young lads with a 'don't care' attitude. They took the full deposit (not just held) and we had to ring them 3 weeks later to get it back.

I just think maybe the instructions could be updated

Cons: We almost did not get the car, as they told us to wait for 20 minutes, than didn't show up. After an hour and a half of waiting on the spot they told us to be at, we stumbled upon them by chance on the parking, then had to wait for another hour or more to actually get the car, since they had problems with other costumers and had to solve them first. So overall, we waited for 3 hours to get the car, and the employees were very rude and not at all sorry for the inconveniece.

Pros: There is no dedicated desk like other providers like Gold Car, EuropCar so finding the agents is hard as they are not always present at the arrival terminal. However, once you get a hold of them it is pretty smooth.

Took forever for my turn in “line” - also unclear which customers were actually next since there was no real line. Cons: The only issue is that since Magic Islands is a smaller operation, they are not located at the area with the other rental companies and to determine their location of the pick up / drop off was not easy despite this information being mentioned on our booking. Once found, great job, but have a sign or representative located in rental car area in the airport to guide customers to their location.

You absolutely have to take photos and videos of the car right at pick up, because if the guys at pickup don't mark the scratched and you have no photos/videos of the car from before you got it, they will make you pay for the damages. Take good photos, I would recommend from above and bellow each side of the car. Plus, we made a video as well.

Took over 2 hours for them to send a tow truck. Initially asked me to try and restart the battery which is ridiculous. Had to go all the way back to the airport to pick a new car wasting another 2 hours. Initially they wanted me to pay for the taxi to pick up the new car. Overall a bad experience, would not recommend at all.

Cons: At the first rent I ask about the refund on CC, at the pickup & on drop off; it should be "immediate" after return the said. When I get the second car I haven't the refund done (3 business days later). So I had to choose, loose the rent and the payment or update to the full insurance without fund on CC. The charged 50 €/day for full cover, the cost of the rent was 40€/day; total 90 €/day for small car(as Fiat Panda). It wasn't write on the contract and it is UNFAIR, no mediation from both rents!

Cons: The rental company charged (not blocked) a deposit of 1500 euros from my debit card, which I can understand because the car was new and rented for 11 days, but I returned the car without any damage on August 13 at 2PM and today is 2PM on August 17th and I still haven't received my deposit back - this is a strange form of business for this rental company, I don't know why they are using my money when we are no longer bound by any contract.

Pros: Great service, easy pick up anf drop off. Car was new and very good quality. Deposit came back promptly. Make sure you make a video when picking up the car. We’ve been asked for it as one scratch was not marked on original paperwork we were given. Scratch was visible on the video so no issues at all. I recommened and would rent again with them.

Pros: We missed the agent at the airport on collection and there was no answer when we called the office. it was a quick process once we found the agent

Cons: The agent was not at the airport when we returned the car. I had to phone the office several time asking where they were. Each time the office said 5 mins. In the end, I had to leave the car keys with a friend as I would have been late for my flight. The office told me I could not leave the car so I had to choose between possibly losing my deposit of 1200 or missing my flight.

Cons: In the agreement with Magic Car it wasn't clear which insurances were included. Booking voucher included damage and theft waiver, agreement contained only 3rd party insurance. This was later discussed with DiscoverCars support which assured that all the insurances are included but it would be much better if this would be clearly visible from agreement with Magic Cars.

Pros: The car was making a metal on metal noise while using the brakes and when turning. We called magic island and they first tried to blame it on us. They literally said, we’ve just had it checked out, it was fine before you took it. You might have used the brake to much (well have you seen Madeira? It’s al steep roads and mountains). They advised to leave the car a bit, it might have been because it’s to hot outside. When after a heavenly argument they agreed to send a mechanic with towtruck.

Cons: The machanic states that the brake pad on the front right was missing!!!! He said it is life threatening to drive without. As magic island crew first wanted.we took pictures of it. We’ve waited a few hours before the taxi came. They didn’t want to make a compensation for the trouble. Kind of a weird thing. It cost more than have a day of our Holliday. From start the car was missing a back windshield, very inconvenient driving in the rain. As well they were 20 min lates a the pick up at night.

Cons: Our flight was early so we were hanging about in the car park area for ages despite calling. I ordered a small car due to narrow roads on much of the island but received a much larger one. On return there was a suggestion that the bad scrape on the wing was down to us despite his squiggles on the rental agreement. He asked if we had photos, luckily we did. Did not like the fact that they took 1200 euros as a deposit during pick up. We did receive this back at drop off but cost us £18 in charge

And last think, the deposit wasn't blocked on credit cars but debited out so due to it i lost 84 eur, because of exchange rate (sell rate and purchase rate of my bank) when it was sent back to credit card.

Cons: The rental company obviously didn't accept Master Card. In the propositions, however, she stated this type of cards as acceptable. We had to improvise when taking over the car. Worse condition of brakes.

Cons: Magic Island didn’t turn up for over an hour for our collection and seemed to have lost our booking. The car was quite dirty and had a fair few scratches. On return they clearly tried to scam us for rim damage and wouldn’t even back down when we showed them photos we’d taken at collection clearly showing the damage! They did eventually give up when they realised they wouldn’t win in court but the whole thing was totally unnecessary. It’s an obvious scam and I wouldn’t recommend anyone use them.

Pros: Easy to find car rental representative, whole process was easygoing, very polite car guy, he pointed out for few minor scratches on car, but also advised us to take a video of car, to avoid any misunderstanding on returning. Credit card deposit reserved very quickly, and all returned on spot, after return of the car.

Cons: We both missed that rear windscreen viper was missing. Since the car was VW Taigo, rear windscreen is pretty much flat and you do need that viper. Because of video taken before accepting the car, it was clearly visible that viper was missing, and he didn't even try to charge it on my account.

One of the staff left there wallet and bag with all there personal documents in the car and we had to go out of our way to get it back to them which was a massive inconvenience. When dropping off the vehicle we had a staff member be very rude and obnoxious and tell us multiple times they had to cut their lunch break short to come and collect the car. I would not recommend this company to anyone moving forward.

They placed a 1,500 euro hold on our credit card which they then charged to our credit card; it took more work to get the refund back from them, and once issued they withheld 65 euros for no reason. Their card reader could not read my credit card so was informed we can just actually use a debit card, although their website clearly stated credit cards are accepted only. Would have saved a lot of hassle if we knew about the debit card beforehand.
