Funchal Drive rent a Car at Madeira Funchal Airport

Pros: Lily was incredibly helpful, and went above and beyond to solve a problem we encountered.

Cons: Very long wait to collect car.

Cons: There was a hidden fees that I wasn't informed about. The company requested to pay additional 35€ to drop off the car at the airport. I already booked my car to drop it off at 6:30am and I paid for that time. However, I was asked to pay extra money as they will be closed at that time and I had to drop it off one day before. Also, asked for a cleaning fee which is not common for renting cars, I had to pay 12€ for cleaning services.

Pros: Great car, great price. Very happy with car. Unhappy with pickup service and late rental fee.

Cons: They did not pick us up at the airport as described. We followed the instructions we were given, they were late, then charged us a 35 euro late fee.

Cons: Pick-up speed was extremely bad. It took us 2 hours. The agents this day were absolutely not efficient. Others clients were complaining and not happy with the service. Also, I would like to remind you that a deposit is « holding » money and should not take 3 to 4 days to get it back. What you do is withdrawing the money and then refound. This is inacceptable ! I will report this of course because it’s not legal.

They would however, take payment for their insurance from the very same card they refused to use for deposit. Pirates.

Cons: The car was ok but on return they charged us €310 for a small new scratch on an already scratched bumper. I was shocked. They refused to discuss it. We felt under pressure to pay as we had to go to the airport. They were quite aggressive about the matter with multiple of the agents pitching in to the discussion.

Cons: The stuff could use a bit of training how to treat customers. The person who I was assigned to was very unfriendly, making it obvious I bother his precious time. Unfortunately when I was returning the car, the same person was there. Hardly saying hello, just grabbing the keys from me and letting me wait there for a while, without even telling me that he inspected the car and everything was ok. I would not recommend this company.

Pros: The rental was horribel. When we brought back the car an aggressive stocky man with black hair and beard refused taking back the car. He literally said " I want to make you problems". We were told later by another agent of Funchal drive that he has mental problems and that on bad days he is like that!!! We had to involve police to get the car back to the company, all of this happened two hours before our flight. It was a horrible stress situation. A crazy Ccompany!

Cons: We were initially given a car with defective brakes. I informed your company via what’s app and was told to take it for inspection to your Funchal office. I was then informed the brakes were of low quality but there was enough pad left. It turned out that the pad was so badly worn that when I braked you could hear metal on metal. I have a recording to prove this. We retuned the car for a replacement. Another customer returned their car at that time so we swapped. This car’s boot did not work!

Cons: Before picking up the car, the rental owner asked to look at the car and take photos of any defects, dents and scratches. We took detailed photos of each fault. When picking up the car, the owner of the rental company showed us two scratches, suggesting that we had scratched them. If it weren't for our photos, we would have lost our secured deposit. Did he do it on purpose and does it with everyone, counting on the car's user not having photos to prove they were taken earlier?

Pros: Cancelled our car without notice before we arrived. Not at all helpful in getting a new vehicle. Do not book with them.

We had to pay at the very lat minute twice the price expected WITH A DEBIT CARD to ensure any damage reimbursement then. At the end, of course, we had no issue or either damage with the car but just spent twice the price expected. The waiting at the airport was also one of the longest compared to other renters and only one person available to pick up the car, we had to wait at least for 30 mins

Cons: It’s funny they didn’t have a problem taking money out my account with a card they don’t accept, but you can’t rent the car unless you take the “the golden edition” which was very expensive for a small Fiat Panda. The guy who wanted to rent the overpriced Panda to me smelled a lot of beer and make an uncomfortable joke about my taxi driver was my boyfriend.

Pros: The man at reception was incredibly aggressive and threatening. He tried to make me take out their insurance for an extra €26.50 a day, even though I had full cover with discovery cars. He explained that I would be charged the full deposit amount for the tiniest scratch on the car. His threats made me worry for the entire rest of my trip about anything happening to the car and prevented me from using it as much as I would have liked to.

Cons: Car we were given had less then 1/4 tank when we got the the hotel it stole, we went to check in and front desk lady asked as about our trip getting in so we told her about our flight and on top of that our car just stole right of the front of the lobby, I tried to start twice. She called rental and they showed up and said that everything is ok with the car and I have enough gas to go to gas station in the morning. And that cost me another 80 EUR .

Cons: Since we did not have a credit card (only a debit card), the car rental agent made us buy their expensive insurance. Even though the fault was on our side, this was an unpleasant start of our trip.

Pros: Funchal drive provides good communication about pickup, return and insurance policy. We were happy we did not have to break the bank for a solid car rental experience.

Cons: The citroen c3 with only 83 horsepower is a little underpowered for some of the steep hills of madeira and on the highways, however it was manageable.

Cons: While clean and new, car was not in perfect condiotion. Engine warning light was on the whole trip and car tire pressure warning kept coming on.

Fortunately we didn't have any accident, so there was no problem with the deposit, but I'm not sure, how would it go if anything happened during the rental. There was no clear information about the additional insurance during booking.

Cons: When we were picking up the car, the rep. didn't want to give us the vechicle referring that my bankcard was a "debit" card and not "credit" card. The rep. offered us a daily insurance 26 Euro/day instead of the deposit. But it was too much for us. We had already paid for a full cov. So we were standing there desperately and thinking what we could do. Finally the rep. offered us a discounted daily insurance 18 Euro/day what we accepted and we got the car. We feel that we were deceived a bit.

I tried to add my partner to use her credit card, because I made the booking with Discover Cars, they said they couldn’t add a driver. they said if we made a new reservation with the same car at the moment they would charge twice the price, this is price gauging, or we pay the total price (132€) again for the highest insurance level. they doubled our cost on the spot.

Once the documents were done.. we had to wait another 20 minutes because the car was not ready.. so we managed to actally take the car around 15.10 instead of 14.00. The car had a really bad smell uf urine and i had to buy car freshner to change the smell inside..

When I called the agency (Funchal drive a car), they told me they would check it out and call me back. I called twice, they did not call back or answer my e-mail. I feel like i was scammed totally, 300 euros is not a joke and was the price of my whole trip!

If cars cannot cooe with Madeira's roads, they shouldn't be available for hire.

Pros: Renault Clio was a great hire car, it included a satnav, even had a reversing camera and parking sensors.

Cons: At the begging we get A4 paper with damages in the car. We checked that car has more damages than in paper but no body care about that, “please make a photo”. Why we should make photo? Why no person from rental and notice everything? When we return guy from service trying to charge me by two damages no noticed in the document. Luckily I recorded the whole car before renting it. Otherwise they would probably have found a stupid tourist and charged me several hundred euros for no my damage.

Pros: Quickness to provide a substitution car.

Cons: The cars were in bad condition, specially the clutchs. One of the cars broke and the substitute car made a lot of noises and you can feel that the clutchs were not perfect. I made the reservation by your company and when arrived at Funchal Drive Office, i presented the credit card of joint bank account with my wife. Since the card had my wife´s name it was refused by your policy about that, that make no sense in this particular case. They made me pay 26.50€ per day, in a total of 132,5€.

I suspect this is the normal practice, so why not have renters call for collection? Alternatively, many of the off airport car hire companies are on the same road/in the same, so they could run a regular shuttle service between them instead of each running their own. Fuel policy also stated as full-to-full, but this was not the case.

Cons: Shenanigans with rental (FunchalDrive agent stated that my booking via DiscoverCars was cancelled, then offered me another car). Left with no choice, I took the offered car but found it barely drivable and with gas tank only 3/4 full. When I contacted DiscoverCars later on I found out that my booking was not cancelled, but since I already had a car, DiscoverCars was not willing to do anything to amend the situation.

Cons: We got there right when they opened to drop off the car in order to make our flight on time. The gate was closed and no one picked up the phone when we called. There were 4 of us customers waiting for 20 minutes before a car arrived with 4 employees from the rental car company…ALL of the employees were 20 minutes late. Not a single one of them apologized for such a royal fuck up. It was a miracle we made our flight.

Cons: Discovery car canceleld my original booking and rebooked it 4 mins apart, without notifiyig me. Both comfirmation had the same reservation number which caused some issues when picked up the car as I only printed out one of the reservations, which turned out to be the cancelled one. After a few call I found out what happened and sorted out the rent quickly.

The rep was determined to extract an extra 200 Euros out of us, and though we protested, we decided that we had little option at that time of night, on our first visit to the island and with no local knowledge. The behaviour of Luis Pais was a disgrace both to your company and the Madeira tourist industry, and he deserves to be dismissed.

Cons: Additional expensive insurance was requested by provider, gold Mastercard was not accepted for deposit (as it was "debit", not a "credit" card), but was accepted for payment of insurance and rental fee. Limit or money for the deposite was not any issue from my side, but provider did not want to accept the deposit. As the provider obvoiusly wanted to sell own expensive insurance for 27 EUR/Day. Definitely not a fair practice. I will never use again.

Cons: The mini bus transport did not arrive as outlined in our voucher. We waited at the pick up point and eventually rang the office. Louis collected us, he said the bus isn’t used and he didn’t have our flight number or contact number so better communication would help. The car was a Fiat Punto with over 85k on the clock and a lot of damage to the right side. It was an old car and should have been repaired or retired long ago.

Pros: The wait for the shuttle from the airport was long. We had to call them to come pick us, they told us they were here in 15 minutes but we waited for 45 minutes dispite their office being 5 ninutes from the airport.

Cons: Funchal Drive are basically a bunch of crooks looking to generate additional revenue from the rental. After having withstood the pressure to buy an upgrade or additional insurance at car pick-up, we were charged upon car return for cleaning the interior. This is after they scrutinised the car outside (nothing found) and inside (just as clean as we got it) until finally they found an excuse. Have not seen anything like it before.

The representatives tried to talk us (and everyone else who was there to pick up their cars) into getting additional insurances, car upgrades, etc. If you are a more compliant person you may fall victim to this. Pros: Terrible - they gave us a faulty car. Drove less than an hour to our villa and it broke down. They then tried to charge us an extra £350 even though we had paid full insurance costs. They also asked if we had insurance through discovery cars, as that way we could claim 'paint damage' to the amount of the mechanical damage which we declined as this is insurance fraud. This outfit are scammers and should not be trusted.

Cons: 1 - first car offered, illegal tyres. 2 - secund car not full tank but ok. 3 - insurance 28.00 euros a day full comprehensive. Robbed. I never paid mor then 15 euros day. 4 - car making noise on left well, reported to them on return. 5 - Rental cars fuel game, for about one mark, they didn't accept. I went to petrol station for more 10 euros. Ok , but still not happy he may want full tank....but I left like it was on pickup.

Cons: Funchal Drive Rent a Car is the worst car rental EVER had. The car was old (could not even go up on reasonable hills), it was dirty inside and had a lot of scratches on the outside. Moreover when we delivered the car, they charged us for one of those damages. Given that I did not have photos of that particular area of the car I could not dispute it, but honestly I felt really scammed. The staff was careless… they were not even there when we went to return the car (we had to wait 45 minutes!)

When dropping off car they were not present at the time that we said and was on contract, 8am. Service employee helped us, but he wasn't able to refund the preauthorized charge on the card. So we had to leave without it. On pick up at airport, unclear where to meet them, took them 30 minutes to arrive. While we waited on curb.
