2026 Top Ten European Cities for a Spooky Halloween Vacation

Aleksandrs BuraksAleksandrs BuraksHead of Growth at DiscoverCars.com

Shadows are lengthening, owls and bats are on the wing, and Halloween is getting closer! Fancy taking a trip? Last year, we loved creating our top ten list of European destinations for a Halloween city break – and daydreaming about the perfect spooky vacation – so much that we thought we’d do it all again to find this year’s most frightfully fantastic destinations.

And in 2026, the ranking looks a little different, with quite a few new cities in the top ten. The ranking takes into account the number of Gothic buildings, the hours of darkness per day, and the cost of hotel accommodation and car rental, to help us identify the most affordable places for your spooktacular city break.

Methodology

We selected an initial list of 27 cities around Europe that are known for their Gothic architecture. We worked out the hours of darkness on 31 October in each location, and gave the cities with the longest hours of darkness the highest points out of a possible 27. The cities with a higher number of examples of Medieval Gothic architecture were also given a higher number of points out of 27. Cities with a lower population were also given a higher score out of a possible 27.

We checked the hotel price from 30 October to 1 November using a popular hotel booking website, and gave the cities with the cheapest hotel prices a higher number of points out of 27.

Finally, as a global car rental comparison site, we have access to car rental price data from our own international network of partners in over 164 countries. Using DiscoverCars.com’s customer-facing search function, we worked out the price to rent a car for the weekend in all these locations, giving cities with a lower cost a higher number of points out of a possible 27.

Ranking table of spooky cities in Europe

1. Sibiu, Romania

Sibiu (2).jpg

The historic Romanian city of Sibiu is in first place with 88 points, nicknamed The Town With Eyes because the rooftops of many of the buildings look like they are peering down at you, thanks to their dormer windows. The perfect place for an atmospheric stroll at dusk! You can also wander across the Bridge of Lies, the first cast iron bridge in Romania – one of many legends surrounding it says that if you tell a lie while standing on it, it will collapse, plummeting you down to the square below! On 31 October, there will be 13:50 hours of darkness in Sibiu.

One reason Sibiu has soared to the top of the chart is its low population – we’ve given cities with fewer people a higher score because less crowded streets can help create a moodier, spookier ambience and make it easier to appreciate the grandeur of their historic streets!

Sibiu is home to the Lutheran Cathedral of Saint Mary, a magnificent Gothic church that’s one of the most famous in the region of Transylvania. It would cost €118 to stay in a hotel for the weekend and €7 to rent a car for this period.

2. Riga, Latvia

Riga.jpg

Riga, the Latvian capital, is in second place with 86 points. This gorgeous city on the banks of the Daugava River would be an excellent choice for a fall vacation that’s full of spine-tingling atmosphere. This time of year is known as Veļu Laiks: the Time of Spirits. Traditionally, food and drink were left out for the souls of family and friends, and candles might be lit to welcome them into the home.

Late October is a perfect time to visit Riga to see the city’s Gothic architecture by night: take a stroll to Riga Cathedral or St. Peter's Church, or why not see the skyline reflected in the city canal? On 31 October, there will be 14:49 hours of darkness. It would cost €70 to stay in a hotel for the weekend, and €19 to rent a car, making this one of the most affordable destinations in our ranking.

3. Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn.jpg

In third place, we have Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, with 81 points. Last year this beautiful city was in third place too. Traditionally, late fall in Estonia is known in the folk calendar as Hingedeaeg or Souls’ Time, when the souls of the dead were said to return. At this time of year, people would clean their houses, prepare enough food for their guests, and avoid making too much noise, as a sign of respect to their visitors.

With 15:08 hours of darkness on 31 October, that leaves plenty of time to see the city’s Gothic architecture by night. One of the city’s most impressive Medieval Gothic buildings is St. Olaf’s Church, where you can see incredible views of the city’s skyline from the tower’s observation deck. You can stay in a hotel from 30 October to 1 November for €89, and rent a car for the weekend for €38, making a trip to Tallinn quite an affordable option.

4. Kraków, Poland

Krakow.jpg

Kraków, Poland was just behind Tallinn with 79 points. Many of the city’s most dramatic Gothic buildings, from churches to Jagellonian University’s Collegium Maius, can be found in Kraków’s Old Town. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a must-see. Listen to the plaintive bugle call that’s played every hour from the top of the tallest tower.

Why not try a guided tour of this beautiful part of the city? There are some that are perfect for Halloween, ranging from ghost and folklore tours to ones that focus on sinister tales of Kraków crimes and murders in centuries gone by. Wieliczka Salt Mine is another attraction with a mysterious atmosphere, with dark corridors full of salt sculptures.

The city is also known for its nightlife, and there will no doubt be plenty of Halloween parties to pick from. You can stay in a hotel for €117 for the weekend, and rent a car for €10. On 31 October, there will be 14:10 hours of darkness in Kraków.

4. Brașov, Romania

In joint fourth place, we have another Romanian city, Brașov, also scoring 79 points. Romania’s sixth biggest city in the historical Transylvania region is full of dramatic Gothic architecture, including Biserica Neagră, the Black Church, the largest church in this style in Southeastern Europe. Brașov has only 237,589 residents. The city’s stunning Old Town is the perfect place for an evening wander, and on 31 October there will be 13:49 hours of darkness.

It would cost €210 to stay in a hotel for the weekend, and €13 to rent a car. Bran Castle could be an ideal spooky day trip from Brașov, as it’s a short drive away, only about half an hour. This fortress, marketed outside Romania as “Dracula’s Castle”, is a medieval stronghold that sits high in the mountains.

5. Gdańsk, Poland

Gdansk.jpg

The Polish city of Gdańsk would be another perfect destination for your Halloween getaway. It ranks in fifth place with 76 points. Fantastic examples of Gothic architecture in this coastal city include St. Mary's Church, the world’s largest brick church, which took over 159 years to construct. The beaches near Gdańsk as the sun sets will also be full of atmosphere, as you listen to the rolling waves under the darkening sky.

In Poland, while there are now Halloween celebrations, the closest traditional equivalent to Halloween would be Dziady or Forefather’s Eve, when the souls of the dead were said to return. Gdańsk will experience 14:32 hours of darkness on 31 October, and it would cost €182 to stay in a hotel for the weekend, while renting a car would cost €23.

Poland also featured in our top ten Bucket List destinations round-up, thanks to its combination of historic cities and beautiful, wild landscapes.

6. Nottingham, UK

The historic English city of Nottingham didn’t feature in our top ten last year, making it a new entrant in our 2026 round-up, achieving 74 points. Nottingham is full of beautiful Gothic buildings, including the 14th-century St Mary’s Church – as well as some impressive examples of Gothic Revival architecture like Saint Barnabas' Cathedral, built later, but with just as much atmosphere and grandeur.

7. Cologne, Germany

Cologne, Germany achieved 73 points. This gorgeous city has plenty of Gothic architecture to experience, including the awe-inspiring Cologne Cathedral, Germany’s most visited landmark and the tallest twin-spired church in the world. Why not try the City of the Dead walking tour, in which experienced guides lead you through the Melaten Cemetery, which is over 800 years old and full of fascinating history?

8. Nuremberg, Germany

Just behind Cologne, Nuremberg, Germany achieved 68 points. This city is full of very well-preserved Medieval buildings like Nuremberg Castle, which has some High Gothic elements, and the stunning St. Lorenz Church and Frauenkirche – all adding up to a seriously impressive skyline.

8. Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg, France achieved 68 points, landing in joint eighth place with Nuremberg. Perhaps this city’s most famous landmark is the towering Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg, with its intricate astronomical clock. You can find it in Grande Île, the historic city centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, full of imposing and beautiful architecture.

9. Edinburgh, UK

Edinburgh.jpg

Edinburgh landed in ninth place with 64 points. The capital city of Scotland has been called one of the most haunted cities in the world, and for some of the longest-standing – and perhaps most haunted! – buildings, you should head to the stunning Old Town. Here you’ll see the iconic St Giles’ Cathedral, a Medieval Gothic masterpiece towering over the city.

10. Bruges, Belgium

Bruges.jpg

Bruges, Belgium landed in tenth place with 63 points. It’s a beautiful city with a UNESCO-listed Old Town and magnificent landmarks like the City Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Why not visit the Lucifernum this Halloween? Open at weekends, this repurposed Masonic lodge is one of the city’s most unusual night spots as well as a private home – a museum, art gallery and cocktail bar at once, with a distinctly spooky and eccentric atmosphere.
