Airport travel guide
Inhabited since antiquity, but always changing, Rome is a place unlike any other. The Eternal City is a metropolis of history, culture, and cuisine, but its atmosphere is best experienced by getting lost among its streets and finding hidden gems on your own. With that in mind, here are three reasons that make Rome a great place to visit:
- Ancient Ruins. From the Colosseum to the Roman Forum, from Ostia Antica to the Domus Aurea, Rome is full-to-the-brim with incredible ruins. Explore these unforgettable sites on your own or with a guide.
- Churches. Rome is home to some of the most impressive religious architecture in the world. Each church explains an important chapter in the city’s history. While it would be impossible to see them all, visiting St. Peter’s Basilica, the Pantheon, the Sistine Chapel, and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is a highlight of any visit.
- Museums. Rome is where many of history’s most famous artworks were created, so it’s no surprise that the city is home to some of the best art museums to be found, including the Borghese Gallery and the Vatican Museums. But many other fascinating museums can also be found in the city. These include the National Etruscan Museum, the Baths of Diocletian, the MAXXI Museum of contemporary art and architecture, and the Santa Cecilia Musical Instruments Museum.
- Tivoli. A scenic town in Lazio Province, Tivoli is one of the best day-trip destinations near Rome. Located in the Sabine Hills and offering impressive views of the land below, Tivoli is best known for its impressive villas. Villa Adriana was once the holiday home of Emperor Hadrian and has been called the largest Roman villa that has survived to the modern period. Meanwhile, some 1,500 years younger, but no less impressive, Villa d’Este attracts visitors with its beautiful fountains, frescoes, and gardens. The drive from Rome takes only about 45 minutes.

We went to the Almalfi Coast, a very lovely area to drive around. I do wish we had rented a small car though for the small and windy roads! A boat trip and swimming in the warm ocean is highly recommended, take beach shoes, the coves/beaches are mostly pebbles. Eating out is reasonable with, of coure, amazing pasta and pizza.

We had to chase a few shuttle buses when we picked up the car at FCO (we didn’t see any shuttle “waiting” there for guests, only dropping off previous guests and they drove away quickly) otherwise no problems. I'm a young woman (on a solo trip, who doesn't speak Italian) who used the car to drive from Rome to Grosseto and then, for a week, go around the area, visiting primarily Niki de Saint Phalle's Tarot Garden a few times and local cities. A car was essential – public transit looked like it would be sparse and unreliable, and I was right – for the Tarot Garden, visiting Ortobello, getting to the nearby beach, going to Bomarzo for the Sacro Bosco (another monster sculpture garden), and getting to and from Rome. Highly recommend the Capalbio area for a relaxing beach/art vacation, though basic Italian is a must!

Great trip, glad we got a small car as some of the roads in Italy were very narrow. All in all the car rental was the way to go! Only advise know how the tolls work prior to going. We didn’t speak Italian and didn’t understand the tolls and the first day got a 75 Euro ticket we are in the process of having an overview and hopefully having it rescinded. GreenMotion as the day of our car drop off had a plaque informing the clients how the tolls work. I wish we would have had this when we picked up the car.

Our destination was Napoli and surroundings with a group of 6. As the people carriers were more than twice a stw, we decided to have a stw and a small car instead. We stayed in Ercolano and made trips to Pompeii, Herculanum, downtown Napoli, a outlet mall and Capri (from Sorrento). Had to change accomodation after two days due to unlivable first villa.

We used the car to drive to Vico Equense in Italy from Rome. The 3 hr drive was great - albeit a lot of traffic. We also got to explore Sorrento and Pompeii with the freedom of having a car in the area! Be aware though- the driving in that area is CRAZY! Very different than the US!!

I have heard some terrible stories of bad experiences renting a car from a local rental car in Italy and I have been always skeptical about renting a car from a local car rental in Italy, Therefore, this is the second time that I have rented with RentalPlus and I definitely recommend them. Last time I even scored a big upgrade for free. I had a reservation for a small compact car and I was given a full size SUV.

We had a road trip for 15 days that started in Napoli and ended in Milano. We did a lot of driving but we had many stopes. First we drove along the Amalfi coast to Vietri Sul Mare for 2 days, then a few days in Rome, a few days in Firenze including a visit to Pisa, a few days in Parma including a train trip to Venezia. Then drove further north stopping at the Bertinelli farm to see how they produce Parmigiano Regiano cheese (highly recommended). The last few days of our trip were spent on the north shore of lake Garda. We stayed in Sirmione and drove around the lake. We even has a few hours in Milano.
I usually don't make hotel reservations in advance, but both Firenze and Sirmione were fully booked so there it would have been better to book ahead of time.
