Inverness Airport Car Rental

Airport Car Rental

The capital and the largest city of the Scottish Highlands, Inverness usually serves as a gateway to that wild and fascinating Scottish region. While many of its most popular attractions are actually located outside the city’s borders, there’s also lots to enjoy in Inverness itself. These are three of the most notable attractions and points of interest to visit in and around it:

  • Architecture. Inverness might only have a population of about 47,000 people, but the city punches way above its weight when it comes to impressive buildings. Some of the most notable examples include the clifftop Inverness Castle, Inverness Cathedral (an important example of Gothic Revival architecture), the modern Inverness Museum & Art Gallery (itself one of the most interesting attractions in the city), and the Abertarff House which, at the respectable of almost 430 years, is the oldest house in Inverness.
  • Inverness Botanical Gardens. The Highlands are famous for their majestic nature, but you don’t need to leave Inverness to be able to enjoy some greenery. Though fairly small, Inverness Botanical Gardens is one of the most interesting places to visit in the city. Free to enter, visitors can enjoy not just the main gardens, but also the Secret Garden a.k.a. GROW Project (which stands for Garden, Recycle, Organic, and Wildlife).
  • Cairngorms National Park. Located just a 40-minute drive from Inverness, but taking up a significant portion of Scotland, the Cairngorms is one of the most impressive protected areas in all of the United Kingdom. The area is known for its many hiking trails of various difficulty, snow-capped peaks, many wildlife species, and, naturally, amazing landscapes.

Services and facilities

Inverness Airport is quite small, but it has a few bars, restaurants, and coffee shops. There are also shops, including a bookstore, a newsstand, and a clothes store, but there’s no duty-free shopping. You’ll also find several ATMs, baby changing facilities, first aid services, a photo booth, and an interfaith prayer room. The airport is equipped for passengers with reduced mobility, and special assistance can be requested, but you should contact your airline at least 48 hours before arrival if you’d like this service.

Nearest gas station

An Oilfast Limited gas station, located at 12B, Dalcross Industrial Estate, Culloden, is right next to the airport and can be reached in about two minutes. But keep in mind that this gas station is only open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on workdays and is closed on weekends. There are many other gas stations in and around Inverness. The closest to the airport is Tesco Petrol at 1A Eastfield Way, which can be reached in about 12 minutes and is open 24/7.

The Highlands are an amazing location, and having a car allows you to visit at your own pace. We didn't have any troubles finding petrol stations, and driving there was a great experience (although be prepared for the weather: it rained heavily during our stay!) Drive calmly: in narrow roads there are plenty of passing places where you can allow cars to overtake you, and other drivers are usually patient so you shouldn't feel any pressure from them.

Inverness itself is quite uninteresting, but the area - Northern Scotland - is fabulous. Hence, Inverness with its airport is the ideal location to hire a car for exploring the terrific highlands (and also areas like Dornoch, Cromarty, Orkney, etc. etc.).

The problem for Europeans driving in Scotland is not which side to stay on, but the width of certain roads (we were only in the Highlands) which was often a bit scary when encountering oncoming cars. Otherwise, we found the Scots to be courteous, patient drivers. Distances were a bit deceptive as they are in miles, not kilometers, and driving times on the various websites are based on the official speed limits, which were probably true for the Scots who knew the roads, but not for the tourists who made up most of the traffic.

Inverness not interesting; I went to Inverness only for flight from Luton, before trip to Orkney and Shetland; rented car for drive from Inverness to Thurso and took car by ferry from Thurso to Orkney, used car in Orkney, left it in Orkney while flew to Shetland. Returned flight to Orkney, picked up car to return by ferry to mainland (Inverness).
