Located about 53 km (32 miles) to the northwest, Malpensa is the largest of the three airports serving Milan. But while most visitors make their way straight for the great northern city, the airport also provides easy access to a number of less celebrated, but equally interesting attractions in the provinces of Lombardy and Piedmont. Here are five such trips for you to consider:
- Lago de Como. The namesake city of Lake Como, Como, lies about 40 minutes northwest of Malpensa Airport. Driving along the shoreline, you will discover ornate gardens and luxurious villas, ancient towns with quaint cobblestone streets, and jaw-dropping views. Como and Bellagio are well-known, but visits to off-the-beaten-path towns like Varenna, Tremezzo, and Menaggio will be just as stunning!
- Lago Maggiore. The large and alpine Lake Maggiore is one of the most popular travel attractions in Lombardy and Piedmont. Known for its scenic coastal towns, well-preserved architecture, and a number of islands that can be visited, the area is about an hour’s drive from the Malpensa Airport. Follow the shoreline long enough and you’ll end up in neighboring Switzerland and the picturesque town of Locarno (though ask your rental car provider in advance if they permit crossing the border).
- Val Grande National Park. The drive from Malpensa takes at least an hour, but visiting the Great Valley is worth the effort. Encompassing a portion of the High Alps, this protected area is known for some of the most amazing mountain views and vistas in Europe. Located in neighboring Piedmont, the national park has no permanent population, so many areas can only be visited in the company of a guide; plus, many of the trails are steep and dangerous, so significant trekking experience may be required. Ask about this at one of the park’s three visitor centers
- Aosta Valley. Another destination that takes up to two hours to reach, but is endlessly rewarding, the autonomous community of Aosta Valley is home to the Italian side of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn, two of the highest peaks in Europe. Naturally, there is no shortage of skiing and hiking options, although the area is also known for its thermal baths. Another notable destination is Gran Paradiso National Park, which Aosta shares with neighboring Piedmont.
- Bergamo. Much more than just the location of one of the other two international airports serving the Greater Milan area, Bergamo is one of the most beautiful cities of Lombardy. Divided into the Upper Town where most of its landmarks are located and the relatively more modern Lower Town, Bergamo is equally known for its historical heritage and delicious cuisine. Located some 93 km (58 miles) from Malpensa Airport, Bergamo can be reached by car in just an hour and 10 minutes.

We drove from Milan to Bologna, then to Florence, on to Rome. We then stopped in Livorno and then return to Milan. It was a great two weeks. I would not recommend driving in Rome unless you own a tank.

We visited Italy, and we knew in advance that we would be visiting multiple places. Unless you are part of a tour, or willing to cede some flexibility (in terms of both how/when/where you go) by just taking rail, renting a car is the best and most personal way to experience things (and to experience MORE things) when traveling. Obviously, travelers from the US, for example, will want to remember that automatic transmission is NOT the default, at least in Europe. On the contrary, it is quite likely you will be given a car with manual transmission. Also, driving around/near/in city centers -- especially if you're less familiar with the terrain and signage and language -- can be challenging. Be vigilant, but also be patient with yourself.

When travelling around in Piemonte you definately need a car if not staying in the major Cities like Turin or Milan. The public transport is difficult on the countryside and there are so many nice places to visit, often located on the hilltops.

I rented the car and went to Switzerland passing the French border by Chamonix, Mont Blanc, and the experience is very beautiful. Coming back to Milan I went by on the Italian border from Switzerland and the sightseeing of the mountain in the snow was amazing. I recommend this trip to the mountains.

Our Hybrid Captur had so many quirks to it that it made it difficult to use for several days. e.g.the car locks if you have the key in your pocket and walk 5 metres away,trapping the occupant in the car.Won't start if seatbelt not done up-an absolute hassle at toll booths when you need to reach out and the car has decided to turn off.

The car was great. Service was really good.
The pick-up office is at the terminal, not at the parking lot. I was bouncing around the parking lot offices before I found it inside.

If you want to visit Milan area outside actual city with family/group of people, then car is a good choice. Traffic in Italy is actually quite fluent when you get used to it.

Greatly recommend goind from Modena to Lucca by the non tolled road (~100km but takes around 3h). These are mountain roads with FANTASTIC views. Highly recommend this experience

Driving in Italy is very pleasant outside of the big cities. Motorways and main roads have comparatively lower traffic loads. The main issue is signage as the road numbers are very small on the signs and you have to have a very good knowledge of the country i.e. the names of the cities, towns, villages etc and their relative location. We missed many turnings as we only saw the road numbers at the last minute.
