A large Atlantic island, Madeira combines the warm weather of the Canaries with the stunning volcanic scenery of the Azores. Whether your goal is to hit the beach, go into the mountains, or sample local delicacies — or, indeed, why not all three? — you’re going to have a great time. These are four of Madeira’s main attractions:
- Funchal. The largest city of Madeira is the main port of entry for foreign visitors, but it’s also one of its main attractions. Located on the island’s southeastern coast, it is home to many notable religious and secular buildings, as well as attractions like the Lavradores Market and Monte Palace Hotel Gardens. Many of Madeira’s best accommodations can also be found here.
- Câmara de Lobos. Called the chamber of the wolves in Portuguese, this village’s name actually refers to the monk seals — “the wolves of the sea”. Although nowadays the sightings of these marine mammals are much rarer than during the arrival of the traveler João Gonçalves Zarco who gave the area its name, Câmara is still a lovely place to visit, mainly thanks to its wild shoreline and Cabo Girão, one of the highest coastal cliffs in the world.
- Laurisilva. Located in the most elevated, inland part of the island, this ancient laurel forest is one of Madeira’s most notable natural attractions. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is believed to be 1.8 million years old and is home to many prehistoric ferns and other plant species. It is important to take care inside the park not to damage the local flora and fauna, but there are several designated hiking paths that permit visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
- Calheta. A quaint fishing town on the island’s southwestern coast, Calheta is also famous for its stunning surfing spots and for the sugarcane mills and rum distilleries (now turned into a museum). Its founding dates back to 1430, so the area also has plenty of historical architecture to enjoy. The drive from Madeira Airport takes about 50 minutes.

Location
Madeira Funchal Airport is 21 km (13 mi) east of Funchal, the largest city and the capital of the island. The trip takes about 20 minutes. Motorway VR1 is the main road connecting the airport to the city. All the other famous destinations of Madeira are also within your reach - for example, Calheta is 50 km (31 mi) northwest of the airport and takes about 50 minutes to reach by a rental car while Porto da Cruz is just 14 km (8.7 mi) north and can be reached in 20 minutes. One of the highlights was the PR1 hiking trail, and D
dolphin watching with Magic Dolphin. Overall some fun daytrips but don't expect a lot on the island. Mostly hiking and the weather can be tricky depending on where you are in the mountains. The food was basic, not very special en not many restaurants to choose from.

Loved Madeira and our Fiat Panda. I would not have wanted a bigger car. I love manual transmission and it was a fun car to zip around in. Small, narrow streets are the norm. We were in 2nd gear when going up the steep mountain.

Gorgeous island. If you’re planning on driving everywhere make sure you rent a car with enough power since the majority of the island is steep and winding. Go for the all wheel drive SUV - worth the extra money.

I strongly recommende to let a car on Madeira so that you can get around on the island. The roads are quite good but narrow and sometimes very, very steep. I was even surprised too see that in was much easier to drive in trafic,
i didnt expect the traffic too be that calm.

Beautiful walks and scenery. Never ate in the same restaurant twice but all very good quality. Funchal has a really vibrant music scene encompassing everything from top notch Classical to Jazz and Rock at the English Church. Lots of Restaurants have their own performers, with free events in the streets in December.

We had a wonderful week in Madeira. Having a hire car isn't essential (the bus network seems pretty good) but it makes it so much easier to get to places when you want to and to areas not covered by the buses. Madeira is mountainous and with that comes lots of windy roads, some of which can be a little tricky to navigate. But the main roads and motorways are excellent and a joy to drive on. We enjoyed Funchal (cable car trip to Monte's Palace is recommended) and all of the resorts we visited. The eastern peninsula and forest lavada walks were highlights. The locals are lovely making Madeira a terrific place to visit.

We highly recommend to do Canyoning in level 2, it was amazing experience with company Epic Madeira. We really enjoyed it.
- Cristo rei + Teleferico do Garajau (really nice with a lot of stairs)
- Tunel das Pocas do Gomez (I loved it😅)
- Cascata dos Anjos (a lot of people, But really nice)
- Fanal forest (unluckily there were no fog)
- Natural swimming pools Porto Moniz (ot was cheap there - about 3€ per one person, really nice with a lot of crabs on a rocks)
- Santana (typical houses, the best restaurant Marcel’s bistro with really kind people)
- Seixal beach (we didn’t like)
- Sao Vincente - Capelinha de Nossa Senhora de Fátima (really beautiful view from there)
- hiking from Pico de Arieiro to Pico Ruivo (it took about 4 hours and it wasnt such difficult as we were expecting, with hiking shoes better, beautiful views, nice shop with souvenirs and drinks 20 minutes under the Pico Ruivo) (on the way back we went only 50 minutes hiking from Pico Ruivo to the parking point to the other side, I don’t remember the exact name)

We've visited St. Lourenco, drove all the way up to parking near Pico Ruivo, climbed to entrance of levadas, went for the sunset to Ponta de Pargo, tried grilled limpets at Seixal, spent a day in Funchal. Still many places left to be seen so there is a good reason to come back!

Visited some wonderful remote areas of the island that had wonderful views. The island is very mountainous and hilly, with many narrow and twisty roads. I would say care hire is not for the inexperienced unless keeping to the main motorway and coastal roads.

We were in Madeira for 11 days and had the car from Airport to Airport for all 11 days. We totally drove over 800 Km. in the 11 days in the Audi A3 which was almost new (just about 15K Kms.). Ideal car for the trip as it has economical fuel consumption and is very powerful which is ideal for the steep roads of Madeira. We practically drove all around the island more than a couple of times. Had no problem with the car or the roads or any other issue. No tickets or fines. Enjoyed very much and having a car is a necessity if you wish to visit most of the places around the island. I would definitely recommend renting from Sixth directly. Very convenient, transparent, honest and reputed. Also the price is very reasonable, we were actually upgraded to an Audi A3 from our original booking of a lower category car. So thank you Sixth - Madeira.

Madeira is an amazing beautiful island. Certainly worthwile to come back. Nature is everywhere. You can make terrific trips. using a rental car is a must. So you can be independent in your choices. Besides nature there is also a lot of cultural stuff going on in Funchal. From classic to modern. Because of the diversity on the island and ofcourse the splendid weather we enjoyed our stay on Madeira.

Car is required for the convenient trip over Madeira, loads of places can be seen within shorter amount of time by driving and it is more convenient. Visiting surf spot on North part, going to Machico beach after and visiting marvelous mountains afterwards. Madeira is full of sport activities: hiking, camping, surfing, walking, swimming.

Other than a short wait for pick up van, the experience was extremely positive. We were right for time at drop off, and the team kindly volunteered to drive us to the airport, even though the shuttle was already out. This made a huge difference to us catching our flight.

During our stay in Madeira, we visited a many interesting places, Funchal, Monte, south coast and nord coast of the Island, the penisula of saint Laurent, the higher pick of Madeira - Pico Ruive, and many many other pleaces. If you have got a car, you are independent to public transport, you have got a more time to visiting intersting places, and not must spend it in bus.

We visited mountains, levadas, cities, sunrise on the eastern ridge and sunset on the western ridge. We drove almost 700 km in a week. Everything went without a problem.
