We really enjoyed staying at The Three House Hotel in downtown Funchal if you are looking for a hotel in the heart of the city. The room and hotel were beautifully renovated and had an amazing rooftop bar and pool. The cocktails and custom service were also amazing. We also really enjoyed eating at Brunch Club, Restaurante Calhau De Sao Jorge (get the smoked meats and passionfruit creme brulee both were to die for!), Cabo Aereo Cafe (great views, very kind staff, delicious grilled chicken and steak for a great price), and Peter's for a glass of poncha!

Roads of Madeira are easy to navigate and in good condition making exploring the island fun. Beautiful views from everywhere. Tons of flowers and fragrant forests. Delicious fresh fish. Friendly and hospitable locals.

Madeira is excellent, beautiful place to visit if you are an active tourist. Definitely take a car if you want to see everything - You will need mobility.

Madeira is great island, but not for everyone. It is very steep and tall, with huge amount of tunnels and local roads are extremely vining and narrow. If you do not have confidence in your driving capabilities and in your car, better to use public transport, buses, local van tours. Lovely beaches, great weather all around the year, great taste of fruit and vegetables, mostly locally grown. A lot of activities and places to visit, from going on different boats for whale and dolphin watching, scuba diving, snorkling, fishing, toboggan ride in Funchal, cable car rides, botanic gardens, great spots for 360 view in mountains, lots of fresh water, waterfalls, lakes, and even go to some shoping. Nice food, reasonable prices, great coffe. At the end is poncha, a local drink from some heavy alcoholic brandy or white rum and lemon juice and honey. It kicks like a donkey, first taste is all about that alcohol part, but then lemon and honey smoother that fire.

Madeira is great if you like hiking and walking. To get to the trails, you need a car that can handle steep and winding roads but is not too big at the same time to fit in the narrow village streets when you go back from the hike for a dinner in a local restaurant serving excellent and reasonably priced food and drinks.

Madeira us a beautiful island with many small villages in valleys and remote locations. Renting a car with a sizeable engine or diesel powered is highly recommended. Parking is no problem anywhere on the island.

You need to be a very confident driver to cope with the steep hairpin bends. We spent a lot of time in first and second gear. The reward for driving bravery is access to stunning views and countryside.
