Airport Car Hire
The capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira, Funchal receives hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Located on the southeastern part of the island, Funchal is both a hub from which the rest of Madeira can be explored and a fascinating city in its own right. These are three of its most interesting attractions:
- Architecture. Despite its relatively small size, Funchal is home to a wide variety of impressive buildings of different styles and epochs. These include the iconic Sé Cathedral, but also the São Lourenço Palace, the Jesuit Colegio Church, the São Tiago Fort which was built to repel pirates, and the Santa Clara Convent with its blue tiles.
- Gardens and parks. Funchal has a disproportionate amount of beautiful public green areas and it would be a shame not to explore at least some of them while in the city. The most famous, Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park, resembles a classical English park with long alleys and impressive gates and has a surprising variety of flora from around the world. Travellers also love the Madeira Botanical Garden and Monte Palace Hotel Gardens.
- Museums. While not as large and impressive as those of Lisbon or Porto, Funchal is home to some fascinating museums giving better insight into the traditions, art, and important historical industries of the island. These include the IBTAM Museum of Embroidery and Tapestry, Wine Museum, City of Sugar Museum, Museum of Sacred Art, and Museum of Natural History.

Madeira Funchal Airport is 21 km (13 mi) east of Funchal, the largest city and the capital of the island. The trip takes about 20 minutes. Motorway VR1 is the main road connecting the airport to the city. Very steep hills so be careful when driving around. Beautiful scenery no matter where you go in the island constantly surrounded by stunning views of cliffs, oceans, and nature. We stayed in a lovely villa with a heated pool. We travelled to wherever on the island the sun was shining. We especially enjoyed swimming on the beach at Calheta, and in the natural rock pools at Porto Moniz. We had great meals at the Sea View Rooftop restaurant at Porto Moniz, and at Solar D Manuel I at Calheta, and at Manifattura Di Gelato at Calheta (wonderful Italian food as well as delicious gelato).

Hiring a car for the first week was a must. I oriented myself and was then more confident catching buses etc. Also, there were some areas on the island I could never have visited without the car. The surfing was very bad. The Levadas were astonishing. I found very few places where I could swim, but when I did, they were incredible. I loved the locals, and they were SO friendly, and helpful.

Great having a car to get round the island. Need to be very careful driving though - roads very steep, narrow and lots of hairpins and blind bends. Parking also difficult at prime spots, even in January. Most challenging driving have done in over 40 years behind the wheel. That said, some spectacular scenery along the cost and in the mountains. You need a small car with a bit of power and to be very good at your hill starts.

We toured beautiful Madeira island in a fabulous Renault Clio. Madeira is very mountainous with beautiful scenery. If you’re here definitely visit Ribiera Bravo, Calaheta. Jardiniere do Mar, paul do Mar and ponta Moniz on the north coast with the natural sea water pools. The Capital Funchal is busier but take the cable car to Monte, visit the gardens, enjoy the views, and come down on the toboggan😂 great fun

Consider where you are going to be staying. Use google maps streetview to see how wide the roads are, how steep, if there are lots of mile-long tunnels (if you go through a tunnel with the window up, to stop the pollution making you feel sick, then you will want air con in the summer months). Madeira is a beautiful place and I really enjoyed the challenge of driving along the narrow roads and steep mountains and through many tunnels. Other drivers in Madeira seem very patient with tourists like me.

You need a car getting around Madeira, there are some great beautiful sites you can get to mainly by car. The roads are steep at times but they are really good, they built a great network of tunnels to get you around the island easy.

Drop off at Car Rental designated Car Park. Make sure the Auto Light function (if available) is on as there are lot of tunnels within South region of Madeira. When joining the motorway, cars will actually stop by junction before entering motorway rather than slowly moving on to the motorway as the cars on the motorway are pretty fast and have right of way. Local roads in Madeira are pretty tight especially within the mountain regions.

We were advised the small engined car (Fiat 500) we hired would struggle on the roads in Madeira and asked if we would like to upgrade. I decided to decline the upgrade. I would definitely agree the car struggled but we managed, if you are not a confident driver I would suggest taking the upgrade.
