I loved driving from Naples to Puglia and would do it again. The landscape is lovely, and there are great stops along the way for clean bathrooms, food, and rest. The drive took us past Pompeii and Vesuvius and it was delightful!

Everything went well except when we were waiting shuttle to take us to airport, the shuttle did not arrived and then one car came to pick up which we thought was a shutlle but it was a normal taxi which I realesed only at the airport when driver was starting to require payment. He went vaguely from 20 to 30 eur and was trying to avoid to pay exchsnge. So I ended to pay 27 eur for a short trip which should have been free. Partly my fault as we went to wrong car but instructions for shuttle was not clear and after long wait it was logical to assume that a taxi which stopped for us was our shuttle. So I would have wished for better instructions to secure our safe transport to airport.

We stayed along the Amalfi Coast and having a car during the off season made it relatively easy to get around and check out the area. I wouldn't recommend driving during high season because it is a challenging area to drive in and more buses and car on the road would be insane. Plus parking was a challenge at times even now.

To get to the Amalfi Coast and for getting around the Amalfi Coast a rental is a must in my opinion, particularly during covid when you might not want to take a bus or other public transport. Prepare to drive on narrow, winding roads though.

Definitely, DO NOT try to drive in Naples historic town. It's a mess, narrow streets, no easy parking (when you find one it is absurdly expensive)... visit Naples and take your car when you are LEAVING the city to a road trip, even if this means that you have to pay a taxi or app driver from/to the airport to pick the car. And you will avoid paying for unused car rental days AND the parking.

We were staying about 3 hours from Naples and public transport was not readily available so a car was essential. Naples, and Southern Italy in general, is not an easy place to drive (poor infrastructure, poor driving by locals), which detracts from the experience somewhat.

Driving in Naples is notoriously hectic and tricky. Once outside Naples, things get a bit less so. We only spent an day or so in Naples - then travelled to the Cilento - beautiful hilltop villages in the countryside, not too far from the beaches. On a previous trip we stayed in Salerno, and visited the Amalfi coast. You naturally need a car for all of these destinations.

We always use Firefly . Cheaper than other providers . Always a wait and chaotic at car hire area but that’s Italy ! Better than some providers . Bit hairy driving and getting out of Naples as so busy . Take sat nav or download google maps !
