As known for its olive oil and wine as it is for the beautiful beaches that surround it, Lamezia Terme is one of the most popular tourist destinations in southern Italy. Add well-preserved architecture to the mix, and you have all the ingredients for a memorable vacation. Here are three of the most interesting attractions found in this corner of Calabria:

• Tropea. Combining well-preserved architecture and delicious cuisine with access to many scenic beaches, the town of Tropea is southern Italy at its best. Make sure to visit the stunning Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola which sits on a hilltop and offers views of not just the city and the sea but also the nearby Stromboli volcano. Every September, Tropea also hosts a blues festival. The drive from Lamezia Terme takes about an hour.
• Reggio Calabria. Though perhaps not as historical as Naples or as scenic as Lecce, the regional capital of Reggio Calabria is absolutely worth a visit. Inhabited for millennia, this is the best place to encounter the Calabrian culture, learn about its Greek roots in the Magna Grecia Archaeological Museum, and perhaps even take a ferry to Sicily, which is just over the strait (though for this, ask your rental car supplier in advance if they permit it). The drive from Lamezia Terme takes an hour and 30 minutes.
• Aspromonte National Park. Characterized by some of the highest peaks in this part of the country, as well as swift mountain rivers and tropical fern growths, this relatively unknown nature park has a feel of true wilderness - even though it’s only a two-hour drive from Lamezia Terme (and even closer to both Tropea and Reggio di Calabria). Home to rich birdlife, the area is also known for its traditional cliffside villages.

Lamezia Terme Airport is located right next to the Tyrrhenian sea coast, about 11 km (6.8 mi) from Lamezia Terme and about 105 km (65 mi) from Reggio Calabria. Motorways SS280 and SS109 are the main roads connecting the airport to Lamezia Terme.

Although the airport is quite small, you’ll find shops selling jewelry, local handicrafts, ceramics, cosmetics, clothes, and newspapers, as well as two bars, a self-service restaurant, vending machines, a pizzeria, and a wine bar. There are also ATMs, a couple of nearby hotels, luggage wrapping services, a first aid station, a pharmacy, and a games room. Lamezia Terme Airport is equipped for travelers with reduced mobility, and assistance can be requested from airport staff.

Nearest gas station

Eni Gas station can be reached in about two minutes. It’s located on the right side of Highway SS280 when driving from the airport to the city. There are many other gas stations near the airport and in Lamezia Terme.
