We went all around Italy, visiting 14 provinces and multiple cities. We drove over 4000km in 22 days. Fantastic trip, renting a car is the way to go. Tip: tell your maps application to "avoid tolls" it will take a bit longer but you will see a lot more.

I drove 3000km, and had a wonderful time from Umbria, to Venice, Lake Como to San Gimignano to Amalfi Coast. I was really surprised at how easy it was to drive in Italy; I am a 61year-old woman, and had heard lots of negative stories about driving in Italy. Instead I found the drivers excellent, and the roads great. Enjoy a driving trip through Italy - you'll love it!
