Crete is beautiful all over, driving needs extra care and you don't need big car to go around the island, unless it is a space issue.

Crete is a big island and it's impossible to visit many of the sites even in 10 days with a car. Great towns, great beaches and lots of history, even to touch some of it you really need a car. We were in a nice village, but off the main roads, so a car was essential. However we explored lots of the inland areas (near Rethymno) that would be impossible to see without a car. A definite bonus for a holiday in Crete.
