The main city on the Sardinian northeastern coast, Olbia boasts some of Europe’s most beautiful beaches, but also a long and fascinating history, attracting thousands of visitors every year. These are three of the main attractions in and around it:

• Costa Smeralda. Known for its long and sandy beaches and its association with glamorous lifestyles and high-end amenities, Costa Smeralda is a seaside stretch of about 20 km (12 miles), and is often mentioned among the most popular destinations in Sardinia. Although beloved by celebrities, owning a yacht is not a requirement to visit – in fact, everyone with a rental car can do so, with the area being only about a 30 minute drive north of Olbia.
• Museum of Archaeology. Sardinia is home to some of the oldest civilizations in Europe, and has also been ruled by various and very diverse powers over the centuries. In Olbia, the best place to learn about this magnificent history is the Archaeology Museum which can be found in the central Old Port area of the city, and also has several impressive shipwrecks on display. The museum is free to visit, and is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and then from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
• Churches. Olbia is home to various beautiful houses of prayer dating back to different millennia and representing a diverse range of architectural styles. The most famous among them is arguably the Basilica di San Simplicio which was first constructed in the 6th century and acquired its present, Romanesque look over 800 years ago. Located on the street of the same name, the basilica is a little bit west of the port area and city center.

Location

Olbia Airport is about 3.5 km (2.1 miles) south of Olbia. Via Degli Astronauti and Motorway SS127 are the main roads connecting the airport to the city.

Small and cozy, Olbia Airport offers duty-free stores and gift shops with local goods, several cafés, a full-service restaurant, and a wine bar where you can try local Sardinian wines. There are also ATMs, a first aid center, a baby changing room, and a left luggage service that’s located in the parking lot.

Nearest gas station
