I paid too much, what to do?
Seeing a higher amount on your bank statement than what you originally booked can definitely be alarming! Usually, unexpected charges come down to a few common reasons: security deposits, local fees, optional extras, or currency exchange rates.
Step-by-Step Guide:
1Identify the Source
Take a quick look at your bank statement. Was the charge made by DiscoverCars.com or the local rental supplier?
2Check for "Pending" Status
If the charge is from the supplier and shows as "Pending" or "Auth," this is simply your security deposit hold!
It isn't a completed charge, and your bank will automatically release it (usually within 20 business days) once you safely return the car.
3Review Your Signed Contract
Compare the "Total Estimated Charge" on the paper contract you signed at the rental desk with your DiscoverCars.com voucher. It helps to look for any items added at the counter, like daily insurance, a vehicle upgrade, or prepaid fuel.
4Check for Local Mandatory Fees
Some fees are paid directly at the desk, like young driver fees, one-way drop-off fees, or cross-border fees.
You can check the "Pay at pick-up" section of your voucher to see if any of these apply to your trip.
What Customers Often Expect vs What Actually Happens:
Expectation: "The price I see online is the exact final penny I will pay at the desk."
Reality: The online price covers the core rental and standard inclusions. Local fees (like toll passes or young driver fees) and optional extras (like a GPS or extra insurance) are charged locally and might include local taxes.
Expectation: "I felt pressured into buying extra insurance at the desk, so I should get a refund."
Reality: When you sign the rental agreement at the desk, it confirms you accept any optional extras or upgrades. Since these are agreed upon directly with the local supplier, we aren't able to refund those specific charges.
Expectation: "My bank charged me more than the voucher said because of the exchange rate, so you should refund the difference."
Reality: If you pay in a currency different from your bank account, your bank applies its own conversion fees and daily exchange rates. Because your bank manages these daily rates, any small differences depend entirely on them.
💡What To Do Next:
If the charge is "Posted" (completed) by the supplier and you can't spot it on your signed rental agreement, just log in to "My Booking" and select "File a Claim." Be sure to upload your final invoice so we can look into it directly with the supplier for you!
