Airport travel guide

One of the largest cities in southern Italy, Bari is also one of the region’s most famous tourist destinations. Combining fascinating history and classy architecture with access to some of the country’s best beaches, this Adriatic port city has everything for a memorable holiday. These are some of the most interesting attractions in and around Bari:
- Basilica and Cathedral. There are many beautiful churches in Bari, but the two most notable ones are clearly the Basilica of St. Nicholas and the Cathedral of St. Sabinus. The former, about a hundred years older, dates back to the late 12th century and is known for its magnificent golden ceiling, while the latter is an important example of Romanesque architecture and is known for its neighboring Diocesean Museum.
- Castello Svevo. Built in the 12th century by a Norman king and soon destroyed by the ruler of Sicily only to be restored decades later by the Holy Roman Emperor, Castello Svevo, or the Swabian Palace, has clearly played an important role in the history of Bari (and that’s not to mention more recent chapters with the involvement of the kings of Aragon and Naples). The imposing structure is known for its walls, surrounding moat, and view of the city and the sea below.
- Alta Murgia National Park. Known for its unique landscapes made up of steppe, karst formations, and pine forests, Alta Murgia is one of the most distinct nature attractions in southern Italy. Great for road trips and hiking, the area is also home to attractions such as caves and the Herbarium Museum, as well as a variety of flora and fauna. The drive from Bari takes only about an hour.
- Piazza del Ferrarese. Located in the heart of the city's historic district, Piazza del Ferrarese is a lively and bustling square that is popular with locals and tourists alike. The square is surrounded by colorful buildings and is home to a number of restaurants and cafes where visitors can enjoy traditional Italian dishes and drinks while taking in the lively atmosphere. It's a great spot for people-watching and soaking up the local culture.
- Teatro Petruzzelli. Considered one of the most beautiful opera houses in Italy, Teatro Petruzzelli is a must-visit for any art or music lover. The theater was built in the early 1900s and features stunning architecture and design elements. Visitors can take a guided tour of the theater and learn about its rich history, or attend a live performance to experience the magic of opera firsthand.
- Polignano a Mare. Just a short drive from Bari, the coastal town of Polignano a Mare is a charming destination that is well worth a visit. Perched atop dramatic cliffs overlooking the sea, the town features narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and picturesque views. Visitors can stroll along the seaside promenade, explore the town's many historic landmarks and churches, or simply relax on one of the town's beautiful beaches. Polignano a Mare is also known for its delicious seafood, and visitors can sample local specialties at the town's many restaurants and cafes.
- Molfetta. A proud and historic port city, Molfetta is much more than just a northern suburb of Bari. Inhabited since before written history, its long and fascinating past is exemplified in such diverse landmarks as the Neolithic cave complex of Il Pulo, the 12th-century Old Cathedral (also known as Duomo di San Corrado), and the 16th-century New Cathedral. The drive from Bari takes no more than 30 minutes.
