Airport travel guide

The capital of Poland, Warsaw is mostly known as a busy and modern metropolis with an active cultural life. But while its historical charms might not be as immediately recognizable as those of, say, Krakow or Wroclaw, it also has plenty in that department that can impress one. Whichever side of this fascinating city you decide to explore, you’re likely to have a good time. Here are three suggestions for your trip:
- Royal Castle. One of the most famous buildings in Poland, the 400-year-old Royal Castle was completely destroyed during the Second World War but was rebuilt in the 1980s and as such is one of the main symbols of Polish history and resilience. A large palatial complex with a beautiful interior and large collection of art, it is one of the most impressive places to visit in the city.
- Palace of Culture and Science. While it continues to split opinion at home and abroad, the massive Palace of Culture and Science is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable buildings in Warsaw. Whether you love it or hate it, the 237 m (778 ft) high example of socialist architecture is a notable relic of its era. Nowadays, the palace provides home to a multiplex cinema and a number of theaters and museums. And needless to say, the views from the top platform are breathtaking.
- Zachęta National Gallery of Art. One of the most visited landmarks of Warsaw, this is perhaps the most notable art museum in all of Poland. Established as early as 1860, it is located in an elegant, reconstructed building that is a historical monument and boasts a diverse collection made up of works of practically all of the most notable Polish artists. Visit the museum’s English-language website to learn more.
- Varso Tower. The aforementioned Palace of Culture and Science is not only one of the most notable buildings of the Polish capital, it was also the highest – until 2021, when it was replaced by the Varso Tower. Reaching 310 meters (1,020 feet), the glass-panneled office building is the highest not only in Warsaw and Poland, but all of the European Union. While mostly serving private businesses, it has an observation deck open to visitors that is at the height of 230 m (755 feet).
