Airport travel guide

Poland’s largest seaport, Gdansk is as notable for its maritime and mercantile prowess as it is for its culture. The city is home to beautiful architecture and plenty of historical landmarks, and there are also sandy Baltic beaches and plenty of nearby day-trip destinations. With all that in mind, these are four of the most interesting attractions in and around Gdansk:
- Town Hall. There are many notable buildings in Gdansk, but the city’s ratusz should get a special mention on any list. Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, it is as notable for its 83-meter (272 feet) tower as it is for its Gothic-Renaissance exterior. Located in the heart of Śródmieście, Gdansk’s main district, the town hall is home to the City History Museum.
- St. Mary's Church. Another Gothic masterpiece, this early 16th-century structure is one of the largest brick churches in the world. It has served both Lutheran and Catholic congregations over the centuries but has always remained one of the symbols of the city. Partially destroyed during World War Two, it was rebuilt in the following decades and is notable for its interior where one can find many religious paintings, including the stunning Last Judgment by Hans Memling.
- Sopot. The smallest of the three settlements that make up the Tricity (the other two are Gdansk and Gdynia), Sopot punches way above its weight when it comes to tourist attractions. A historic resort town, it is known for its many and varied spas, but also the wooden pier and seafront, as well as unique architecture like the Crooked House. The drive from Gdansk takes about 30 minutes.
- Ptasi Raj Reserve. A protected area of wetlands, sandy beaches, and coastal pine forests, Ptasi Raj (or Bird Paradise) is one of the loveliest nature areas around Gdansk. Technically a part of the city, the area is just a short drive northeast of the city center. Enjoyable to visit during any time of the year, the area has many hiking paths and bike routes, but it’s also possible to simply follow the coastline.
