There are lots of hills so it is recommended to drive a SUV here, you might come across a road or 2 or a few that a compact cross over SUV may slightly struggle with. Trip was great overall.

I fully recommend hiring a vehicle to visit the island at your leisure - we visited lots of beautiful places, the mountains and coast alike.
The roads are excellent and no potholes like the UK, routes and directions are clearly signed - it’s a pleasure to drive in Madeira.
Freedom to drive anywhere you please makes the holiday even more special and enjoyable.

I visited some beautiful places in Madeira including Ribeira Frio where there is an easy Levada walk with fine views, also Porto Cruz which is very beautiful, we had a very nice lunch at Deserta Pequena (Camara Lobos), we also enjoyed Madeira Flavours restaurant in Funchal, also beekeeping day experience at Santo António da Serra booked through Airbnb (it was hard to find the farm but very natural environment and made welcome by the friendly couple who run it).
