Airport travel guide

Located on the Mediterranean coast at the center of the famous Costa del Sol, Malaga is arguably one of the main beach destinations in Europe. But while the sun and the sea are definitely to be enjoyed, getting a rental car in Malaga also means a wealth of potential day-trips for adventure-ready travelers. Here are three suggestions for just such a trip:
- Granada. Famous for its Moorish architecture, the city of Granada is, according to some seasoned travelers, the most impressive destination in all of Spain. The number one attraction is no doubt the Alhambra, the stunning palace and fortress complex that exemplifies the blend of Arab and Spanish influences — but the city breathes history and character on every step of the way. Located 127km (79 miles) northeast of Malaga, Granada can be reached in an hour and 30 minutes.
- Sierra Nevada. A mountain range and a national park, the Sierra Nevada is home to a number of peaks rising over 3,000 m (10,000 feet), the highest anywhere in mainland Spain. The area is home to a number of winter resorts (they are responsible for the saying that in Andalusia you can ski in the morning and swim in the Mediterranean in the afternoon) — and you can also paraglide, climb, trek, watch wildlife, or simply take in the magnificent views. Located just east of Granada, Sierra Nevada is about a two-hour drive from Malaga.
- Ronda. A cozy town in the inland part of southern Andalusia, Ronda is best known for the stunning gorge upon which it is located and the bridge that crosses it. Known as Puente Nuevo, or simply the new bridge, it offers great views of the nearby Grazalema Mountains. Ronda is also home to beautiful churches, well-preserved Arab bathhouses, and caves in the nearby Sierra de las Nieves Nature Park. The trip from Malaga takes about an hour and 20 minutes.
- Seville. Known as the birthplace of Flamenco and the hub for some of Spain’s earliest and most famous voyages to the Americas, Seville is an amazing place to visit. Attractions include the General Archive of the Indies, Alcazar Palace, and the home matches of two of the most passionately supported football teams in Europe. The city is also an absolute foodie’s delight, providing an opportunity to taste all of the most famous dishes of Southern Spain. The drive from Malaga to Seville takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes.
- Tarifa. Drive south down the coast from Malaga, go past Gibraltar and Algeciras, and you’ll soon arrive at Tarifa, one of the most popular beach towns in all of the country. Historically known for its Roman ruins and 10th century castle, nowadays its location on the Atlantic coast has also made it one of the surfing meccas of the country. The drive from Malaga takes about two hours.
- Sierra de las Nieves National Park. Although not quite as imposing as the aforementioned Sierra Nevada, the Nieves Mountains are a wonderfully wild nature area known for its many trails, deep caves, and views of the Mediterranean in the distance. Better yet, they can be reached in only about an hour by car from Malaga.

Main airlines
Malaga is a popular vacation destination and therefore its airport is served by many low-cost airlines. Vueling, Ryanair, Norwegian Air Shuttle, easyJet, Air Europa, and TUI Airways are the largest of these. There are also domestic flights and flights by main carriers from other European cities.
Terminals
The two passenger terminals, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, are connected, and it’s quite easy to walk from one to the other.
Location
Malaga Airport is 8 km (5 miles) from the city. Motorway MA-20 and Av. de Valle-Inclán are the main roads connecting the airport to Malaga.
Most popular types of rental car
Car rental desks
The car rental companies that are located in the terminal have desks in level -1 of Terminal 2. Some, like Goldcar, also have desks in the baggage claim area of Terminal 3.
Alamo, Enterprise, Delpaso, Centauro, Surprice, and OK provide shuttle services to their locations.
Solo provides a Meet & Greet service where a rental agent meets you in the arrivals area and you pick up the car at the airport.
Services and facilities
You’ll find shops, restaurants, bars, ATMs, and a lost property office. There’s also a pharmacy, a baby room, a children’s play area, a pet area, an exhibition area, a prayer room, and the Aviation Museum. There is no luggage storage. The airport provides assistance to passengers with reduced mobility, but you should get in touch in advance if you’d like this service. You can find more information on the airport's official website.
Nearest gas station
The most convenient station for most renters is a BP station just off of MA-21 and just before the airport. It s located right next to Delpasso’s rental office.
Another BP station can be found at the airport. This is only convenient for those returning rental cars to rental companies located in the terminal.
If returning a rental car to OK, then you will need to use MA-20 instead of MA-21 (coming from Malaga). A block north of OK is a MADESE station.
If returning a car to Centauro, then you will also need to use MA-20 instead of MA-21 (when coming from Malaga). You can use the same station as OK renters, though it requires a circle. An alternative is to fill up closer to the city.
