Airport travel guide
Sometimes overlooked in favor of its neighbors, Valencia to the north and Andalusia to the south, Murcia remains an under-the-radar destination, but can be a fascinating place to visit if you give it a chance. In addition to lovely Mediterranean beaches, it also boasts ancient sites, unique culture, and genuine hospitality. These are three of Murcia’s most interesting attractions:
- Murcia. Going by the same name, the capital city of the region is also one of its most interesting destinations. The city is known for its orchards, well-preserved architecture, and the stunning hilltop castle of Monteagudo with a Jesus statue on top of it. Also worth visiting is the Murcia Archaeological Museum that has many local artefacts from the different peoples and civilizations that used to rule the area.
- Cartagena. Located in the south of the region, Cartagena is Murcia’s main port, but, more importantly, also its main historical attraction. Established by the Carthiginians, it has been inhabited for more than 2,200 years and boasts Phoenician, Roman, and Moorish landmarks, as well as the fascinating Museum of Subaquatic Archaeology.
- Mar Menor. Located in the southeast of the region near the border with the Valencian Community, Mar Menor (or the ‘Smaller Sea’) is a saltwater lagoon and one of the most popular water sports hubs in Spain. Especially known for its great kitesurfing, the region has a coastline of about 50 km (30 miles) plus the 22 km (15 miles) of the narrow spit of La Manga that separates it from the Mediterranean. A car trip takes only 30 minute from Cartagena and 50 minutes from the city of Murcia.
