Airport travel guide

One of the main cities of the Autonomous province of Galicia, Vigo is known for its industrial heritage but has actually been inhabited since ancient times and retains some Roman landmarks. Although quite different in look and atmosphere from the tourist hubs of the Mediterranean, the natural beauty that surrounds the city makes some Spaniards consider it among the most beautiful in the country. These are three of the most interesting attractions in and around it:
- Sea Museum of Galicia. A proud port city on the Atlantic Ocean, the history and development of Vigo is intimately tied to the sea and its industries. The best place to learn about this heritage is the Museo do Mar – located in a former canned food factory near the coast, it explores traditional Galician fisheries, the sunken ships of the Galician shoreline, and more.
- Museum of Contemporary Art, Vigo. Although located in a lovely 19th-century building, this museum (also known by its abbreviation, MARCO) is focused on modern creative endeavors, making it one of the best contemporary art centers in all of Spain. In addition to permanent exhibitions, it also frequently hosts various cultural events. Visit its English-language website to learn more.
- Co-Cathedral of Santa María, Vigo. The original cathedral of Vigo was burnt down during the 16th century by the English, but its reincarnation, which dates back to the first half of the 19th century, is one of the important examples of religious architecture in the city. The cathedral combines neoclassical and baroque elements and has the title of Co-Cathedral which it shares with an important and beautiful church in the town of Tui.
