Airport Car Rental
A mecca of nightlife and beach parties, Cancun is one of the tourist trademarks of Mexico. But while the city itself undoubtedly has lots to offer, getting a rental car will give you access to a number of other interesting destinations of the Yucatan peninsula. With that in mind, these are three of the most fun day trips from Cancun:
- Chichen Itza. Located a good two-and-a-half-hour drive southwest of Cancun, Chichen Itza is nonetheless worth the long trip. The largest Mayan site in Mexico, this pre-Columbian city is best known for the impressive Pyramid of Kukulcan (also known simply as El Castillo) and its sculptures of feathered serpents, but the rest of the temples and sites are just as awe-inspiring.
- Cozumel. Another very popular tourist destination, the island of Cozumel is known for its beautiful coastline and as a hub of scuba diving and snorkeling, chiefly thanks to the reefs that surround it; the island is also home to the Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park and Arrecife Alacranes National Park (also called the Scorpion Reef). A drive south from Cancun takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes and includes a ferry, so ask your rental car provider in advance if they permit it.
- Sian Ka’an. One of the most beautiful nature areas in the region, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is known both for its diversity of flora and fauna and for its ecologically conscious tours. Made up of a tropical jungle, mangrove forests, and even a barrier reef, the area is home to unique wildlife species like kinkajous, ocelots, and coatis. There are tours you can join, but it’s possible to also visit the reserve independently, although, depending on the areas you want to access, you might need a 4x4 vehicle. The drive from Cancun takes about three hours. A trip to Sian Ka’an can be combined with a visit to Cozumel or to the nearby Mayan site of Tulum.

We went way off the beaten path, backroads through jungles to ruins, remote waterfalls, wild beaches and little villages. Streetfood and airbnb all the way. Biggest pleasure was going to street markets in villages and trying any food that we did not recognize.

Driving in Mexico is the same as driving anywhere where people are excellent drivers. You have to know the rules of driving in Mexico. So read up on signage and how people pass on 2 lane highways. Visited the south end of Costa Maya. Driving is NOT very scenic. It is very flat and forest/jungle on both sides other than when you enter a town..Playa del Carmen, Tulum etc. Having the car during our stay allowed us to go visit different sites as well as small town we otherwise would not have had the chance to do. Certainly plan on renting again.

The Riviera Maya is amazing! Driving from Cancun to Tulum was thrilling. There is so much life and vibrancy to the area. Driving around was an adventure in and of itself. Tulum Centro was where the magic is. The locals are warm and welcoming, many speak english very well. It is a very international town. Sian K'aan and the Muyil ruins were spiritual in their natural beauty. The playa is beautiful in Tulum, opt for the north beach and get there very early on the weekend if you are visiting either the playa or the Tulum ruins (Muyil was 1000% better) Skip the overpriced Hotel Zone and the fancy restaurants (except for Arka) and opt for some of the best Al pastor street tacos youll have in your life that cost less than a dollar! We didnt want to leave, and we will definitely be back.

We used the car for driving from Cancun to Merida, Valladolid and Tulum.
Thanks to the car we could visit natural reserve Sian Ka'an, Chichen Itza and few cenotes that weren't on the main road.

Stayed in Tulum, touring Cenotes and authentic street taco's for a few days, spent a day at Coba ruins, and another day at Chichén Itzá. Our flight back was early so we stayed at the Courtyard by Marriot the night before the flight. It was a great hotel and offered shuttle service to the airport even for our flight at 6am
