Thrifty at Cancun Airport

Pros: Not much. The whole process is very dubious and forces you to buy insurance at more than twice the initial proposed cost. They claim that they cannot honour discover rates because they are illegal!

Cons: Being forced to pay inflated prices. This is by far the most expensive car rental in the world. Why does Discover cars do business with them. What value do they provide? They are just playing the game.

Cons: Discover Cars claims of having less expensive insurance is NOT TRUE !!!! Because we booked thru Discover, our insurance was MUCH MORE !!!! SHAME ON YOU !!!! NEVER AGAIN

Cons: They stuck me with ENORMOUS additional insurance costs. Many times more tha the rental itself. It was partly my fault in not studying carefully the discovercars contract that gave me TOTAL COVERAGE. Part of the scheme was that the Thrifty car pick-up location completely lacks telephone coverage so I could not get ahold of discovercards to get help. By the time I did it was too late, I'd had to pay the sucharges in order to get the car. Also the windshield wash reservoir was completely empty.

Cons: No transparency and seemed little connection to the booked price and what I paid. How do I get my 212$ returned at the minimum?

Cons: The sales agent, waited for the car for almost an hour because the car booked wasnt available - then 2 cars later - we finally decided on one to just get us to our accommodation. Then the driver had the nerve to ask for a TIP!

Cons: There was no agent at the Thrifty counter. An agent from Hertz came over and said they were all the same agency. So why would there be separate counters? It is all under the AVASA name so they are using the names of hertz, thrifty, and dollar as as a ruse to fool people into thinking the customer is dealing with a reputable company.

Cons: We were told that we might have to pay for additional insurance. We weren't told to expect that it would be as much as renting the car in the first place. I don't recommend renting a car through DiscoverCars in Mexico. Fine in Europe, not in Mexico.

He also tried to add another driver. I felt like we were getting taken for a ride well before we got the car. The rental process took over an hour. And the drop off at the airport has no signage from the road. Not the same as where you pick up the car. Hard to find and the guy at the office gave poor instructions

Cons: On arrival to the rental facility we were approached by a representative prior to going into the counter area. Only ONE person allowed even though there were two other customers in the whole big area. RED FLAG!! Quoted online $650, husband comes to lobby to tell me it's now $1700 to take the car!! NOPE! After we said no, a manager somehow drops $500 from price and after traveling for hours through the night (it's 7:30 am) we take car for double price. Car was clunky crap! DON'T GO HERE!!!

Cons: Charges were very unclear at the counter pickups; I didn't know what had changed from my paid contract until I checked on line and saw the exorbitant charges. Unfair.

It also took us over 30 minutes of circling to finally figure out where to drop the vehicle off. All the thrifty signs were pointing in the opposite direction but you had to drop it off at the hertz location. Terrible service and what a scam. Never again!

Pros: The rental is by a cooperative arrangement of rental car agencies. It works well. I liked the car condition documentation provided in addition to what I do myself. All positive comments.

Cons: It would be nice to know this is a cooperative shared facility. The return location is provided via a QR code ( which did not work). It weed ojlc be better to provide a page with a map or just inform to follow the Hertz rental return signs (same location 😋)

Cons: It was a horrible scam. They forced more insurance on me even though I informed they I had gotten additional insurance. Then without any notice they added a premium service (that we never used) and refused to remove the cost. The agent who assisted me should be fired. I have rented cars in Mexico and other foreign country's and never been this dissatisfied.

Cons: As I mentioned in a previous comment box, what was advertised online was not even close to what was discussed and paid for.

Cons: The Thrifty company was combined with the Hertz office. The agents at Hertz attempted to extort over $1,000 from us to pay for car insurance we did not need. They threatened to cancel our reservation if we declined. We ended up in the rental office for three hours. It was a nightmare.

Cons: Terrible experience - will never rent through discover cars again! Specifically rented the car from this site because it said Thrifty only required a refundable security deposit of $280. When we got there, Thrifty said the security deposit was $2000 and didn't honor discovercars, or their insurance coverage as they were 3rd party vendors! Horrible experience! Never again!

The leasing agent was trying to hard sell me an "up-sell" he kept telling me horror stories of people who didn't buy the extra insurance. He should just offer the opportunity to buy extra insurance without the horror stories of what could happen. I also didn't like the large $2500 "hold on my credit card but I understand it.

Pros: I didn’t deal with a Thrift rep. I dealt with a male in front of a Hertz sign. The man attempted to scam me. He actually did scam me. He would Not let me leave in the car without me first purchasing his insurance, although Discover claimed I did not need additional insurance. I becam highly upset and cursed the male agent several times. I’m surprised so didn’t get thrown out of the business. Discover really needs to clarify if a vehicle is insured or not. I don’t like male scammers.

Cons: I waited in line over TWO (2) HOURS to get my car; they tried to tell me they didn't have my car and tried to get me to agree to an expensive upgrade; they tried to say that they don't accept DiscoverCars' insurance, then they just sat around trying to wait me out to see if I'd agree to an upgrade. When they saw that I wouldn't budge, they finally gave me my car. I could have been in and out of there in under 30 minutes, but they do this nonsense with every single person who has a reservation.

Cons: They scammed us, trying to charge much more than the price we were quoted when we reserved. Also claimed we returned with less than full gas tank, when tank was actually full, and we had to prove otherwise with photos before they backed off.

Pros: I liked absolutely nothing about my experience with Thrifty. They refused to let me leave with the car at the rate I booked and said I needed to read “the fine print.” Charged us nearly 1.7-1.8k USD for the rental. It was easily the worst experience of our entire stay in Mexico.

It was more than i had budgeted and declined the car. The insurance sales is a bit of a scam, it seems it is done on a commission basis by the representative. I would search other car rental agencys outside the airport. I found freedom car rental, the pricing was still more than i had budgeted, but much better than the airport.

Cons: I made a reservation for a particular type of vehicle (Nissan), but I was forced to upgrade at my own expense. Because of Customs, I was one hour late to my reservation. I was told that the car was released and I would have to upgrade to a more expensive Mitsubishi . I would not have minded the upgrade if it had been at the rental agency’s expense (what I have experienced in the past). It was kind of an up-sell and under the circumstances, I had no choice but to go along.

Had to wait 30 mins for no reason. Drop off should take priority over people who haven’t heard of internet trying to hire in the office!

Cons: As I stated above.. The fact we didn't get the car we ordered.. although it says Jeep or similar. The car we got was not at all similar. A lot smaler. and that wouldn't have been a problem if we would have had any kind of reduction. Also the fact with the unnecessary insurance they wanted to sell us on top of the insurance we already had payed for.

Booked Nissan x-trail, got Nissan kicks. When trying to change the next day, x-trail was still out of stock

Cons: There was no representative at the Cancun airport counter for Thrifty, we were taken to via shuttle to Hertz where the reps would not honor the reservation agreement price made through Discover, and instead forced us into paying 3x the reservation price citing language in the contract that they claimed left out expected charges for miles driven. Worst experience I have ever had with a car rental agency, it is complete bedlam at the Hertz agency in Cancun, and employees prey upon the consumers.

Pros: Not much..slow pickup process.made me wait at their office with 4 guys. Standing around for another person to come. Tried very hard to sell me a different more expensive car..and all the extras they offer. At drop off there was no details on where to go. Not given any agent contact in case of issues with the car. Not the service I expected from Triffy.

Cons: The car provided was also not adequately roadworthy. No Peking horn is ilegal in all the countries. No power steering is a necessary that is provided by all manufacturers these days as basic. And no antylock brakes made it hard in emergencies.the boot cover also didn't fit the car and not staid on.
