wouldn't recommend renting car in mexico/yucatan. Risk of crashing seems fairly high, risk of damage from dangerous driving of others. Outrageous insurance charges which seem impossible to avoid.

We spent five weeks exploring the Yucatán peninsula. High points were the Mayan archeological sites of Uxmal, the little visited Balamkú in Campeche, and of course Chichen Itzá; Casa de los Venedos in Valladolid (a wonderful folk art museum); the yellow city of Izamal; the modern art museum, municipal museum (for even better modern art) and the World of the Maya museum - all in Mérida; sailing on Lake Bacalar; and of course swimming in the sea south of Tulum.
