Airport travel guide
The city of masks and bridges, Venice attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, but that only makes sense when you’re one of the truly unique destinations on the continent. While it would be impossible to list all of Venice’s landmarks, here are some suggestions for you to start planning your visit to the city:
- Saint Mark’s Basilica. As much a symbol of the city as its canals and gondolas, most visitors to Venice will want to see the church and square of San Marco at least once. The large crowds that are always present in the area can make the experience a bit hectic, but it’s worth the hassle nonetheless. The square is also home to several other Venice’s most famous landmarks such as Doge’s Palace.
- Bridge of Sighs. Known as Ponte dei Sospiri, this is another iconic landmark of Venice. Made from the instantly recognizable white Istrian limestone, its name comes from the bridge’s proximity to a historical prison, having been the last sight of freedom that inmates got to see before their imprisonment. Although not as famous as the original, replicas of the Bridge of Sighs can be found in the British university cities of Cambridge and Oxford.
- Correr Museum. Also located in Saint Mark’s Square (more specifically, its southern side), the Correr deserves special mention as it is perhaps the most notable art museum in all of Venice. Slowly preparing for its 200th birthday in 2030, it boasts a truly impressive collection of the works of Venetian masters of different eras.
- Burano. A small island north of the main center of the city, Burano is one of the quaintest areas of Venice. Accessible via a short boat ride and only to be explored on foot, it is known for its colorful buildings that dot the lines of canals, the Lace Museum, and the area’s unmistakable ‘s-shaped cookies.
