Airport travel guide
It’s not an overstatement to call Venice one of the most famous places in Europe. With world-famous landmarks like Doge’s Palace, wide squares, and an atmosphere like nowhere else, it attracts thousands of visitors every year. But Venice is not only an attraction in itself, it is also a part of a larger northeastern Italian region which has plenty to see and do. Here’s our pick of interesting places that you can visit as a day-trip from the floating city:
- Padua. Founded 3,200 years ago and later ruled by Greek kings, ancient Romans, invading Goths and the Venetian Empire, Padua is home to a lot of history. Famous sites that can be visited by tourists include the Roman Arena and gardens, the city walls, and the remains of the old Jewish ghetto, all with their own atmosphere and story to tell. Located just 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Venice, Padua can be reached in about 40 minutes.
- Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park. Located on an idyllic lagoon on the Adriatic Sea, it might come as a surprise to some that Venice is only a short drive away from some seriously impressive mountains. Perhaps the best proof of this is Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, a protected nature area made up of sharp cliffs, swift mountain streams, and karst formations. There are marked hiking trails in the park and if you’re lucky, you might get to spot a chamois mountain goat, mouflon sheep, or a boreal owl. Located some 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Venice, the national park can be reached in about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
- Lido. Although by no means a hidden gem, it can be surprising how calm and relaxed the island of Lido can be when compared to next-door Venice. Meaning simply “beach” in Italian, the island is home to the Lido Planetarium, picturesque facades, and quaint beaches. You can reach the island by boat from Venice. Some rental car providers permit bringing a car along while many others don’t. At any rate, being just 11 km (5.6 miles) long and 700 meters (2,300 feet) wide, Lido is easy to navigate on foot. Parking your car in Venice and picking it up after your return is definitely an option. Keep in mind that the official port parking lots can be quite pricey — if you look around, cheaper spots should be available nearby.
