Why can the rental supplier not see the payment I have made to DiscoverCars.com?

It can sometimes be confusing if you arrive at the rental desk and the agent says they don’t see your online payment. This usually happens because partial and full prepayments are processed through our platform first, and the payment details are then reconciled with the local rental supplier’s system.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1 Check Your Payment Type
Take a quick look at your DiscoverCars.com voucher.

  • Partial Prepayment: You paid a portion of the total cost online through our platform to secure the car and cover any Full Coverage. In the supplier’s system, only the remaining balance payable at the rental desk is displayed, which is the amount due directly to them. They do not see prepayment in their system.

  • Full Prepayment: You paid the full rental cost online. The supplier’s system will show your booking as "Paid by Voucher," even if they cannot see the exact amount you paid us.

2 Prepare for the Security Deposit
Even with Full Prepayment, a security deposit is required at the desk. The online payment covers the rental cost, while the deposit is a separate hold requested by the supplier to cover potential liabilities during the rental.

3 Expect Two Invoices
Since payments are made to two different companies (DiscoverCars.com online and the rental supplier at the desk), you’ll receive two separate documents:

  • A receipt from DiscoverCars.com for the “Paid online” amount.
  • A final invoice from the supplier for the “Payable at desk” amount.

What Customers Often Expect vs What Actually Happens:

Expectation: "I fully prepaid for my rental online, so I have absolutely nothing to pay at the desk."

Reality: Your rental time is fully paid, but you still need a valid credit card at pick-up so the supplier can place the mandatory security deposit hold. Any optional extras you choose—such as a GPS, child seat, or additional driver—are paid directly to the supplier at the rental desk.

Expectation: "I paid $500 online, so the supplier should see $500 in their system."

Reality: With Partial Prepayment, the supplier sees the amount that is payable directly to them at pickup. (e.g., $300). They do not see the $200 you paid to us. With Full Prepayment, the booking appears as “Paid,” while the exact online amount may not be displayed due to system and commercial privacy settings.

💡 Did You Know?

DiscoverCars.com operates as a booking platform. The "Paid online" amount secures your car and covers our services, while any “Payable at desk” balance goes directly to the local supplier who provides the vehicle.

What To Do Next:

Simply show the rental agent your DiscoverCars.com voucher—it clearly lists the “Pay at Pick-up” balance. If you have a Full Prepayment voucher and the supplier asks for the rental cost again (not the security deposit), contact us directly from the desk, and we’ll assist right away.
