Airport Car Rental
The largest city on New Zealand’s South Island, Christchurch is one of the main gateways to everything that this majestic, sparsely populated region has to offer, as well as being an interesting destination in its own right. Continuing to admirably recover from the series of earthquakes that plagued the city at the beginning of the 2010s, it is home to a surprising number of landmarks and things to do and has many great places around it that are perfect for day trips. Here are four of them:
- International Antarctic Centre. One of the southernmost cities in the world, Christchurch is a global hub for the exploration of the relatively-nearby Antarctica. Shared by the New Zealandic, Italian, and American Antarctic programs, the International Antarctic Centre is a fascinating place to learn about the majestic seventh continent. Attractions include the experience of what an Antarctic field trip is like, a snow storm room, and even a rescue center for the kororā (or little blue penguin). Visit the centre’s website to find out about visiting.
- Orana Wildlife Park. The largest of its kind in New Zealand, Orana is a wildlife sanctuary dedicated to the protection of threatened species. With minimal fencing and many of the animals roaming free, it feels more like a safari than a zoo (visitors, instead of animals, are kept inside portable cages where barriers are necessary). Some of Orana’s inhabitants include silverback gorillas, lions, and many native animals. It also has educational programs about conservation.
- Arthur’s Pass National Park. Named after a mountain pass in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, this is one of the largest and most popular nature reserves in the area. Retaining its original wilderness, Arthur’s Pass National Park is also a great place for climbing, hiking, skiing, or simply taking in the mountain views. Located about 135 km (84 miles) northwest of Christchurch, Arthur’s Pass takes less than two hours to reach and can thus be visited on a day trip (although there are opportunities for accommodation in and around the park). Other, smaller nature areas closer to Christchurch include the Torlesse Tussocklands Park and Waimakariri River Regional Park (both are on the way to Arthur’s Pass), as well as the Banks Peninsula to the east.
- Arts Centre. Located on Worcester Boulevard, in the city itself, this is one of the most important art spaces of Christchurch and South Island. The center is made up of a complex of stunning Gothic buildings that used to house local boys and girls’ high schools. There are 23 buildings in total, 21 of which have been given heritage status. The area was badly damaged in 2011, but impressively, about 75% of them have since been reopened.
- Akaroa - the famous little town on the Banks Peninsula around an hour's drive away from Christchurch. The harbor on which Akaroa was built is famous for its wildlife visitors — hector dolphins. Wildlife-watching boat tours are a major tourist attraction in the area. Akaroa is a great first stop on a road trip around the South Island.
- Kaikoura - Located around a two-hour drive North of Chistchurch is Kaikoura, a beautiful little town that lies at the bottom of the Seaward range. Hiking, surfing, and wildlife watching are the top attractions in Kaikoura. In 2016, Kaikoura suffered a lot of damage from the earthquake, when the water level in the bay rose by up to two meters in places! Whale-watching tours are a must-do when visiting Kaikoura.

An Allied Fuel gas station is located right next to the airport, at 75 Orchard Rd., from which the rental car returns of the companies located at the airport is just one kilometer away. Lucky Rentals is even closer to the station. It is open 24/7.

Is a Malaysian driver’s license valid for renting and driving in New Zealand?
As Malaysian driver’s licenses are in English, they are valid for renting and driving in New Zealand. Any customer with a driving license that is not in English, will have to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with their original driving license.

Does the rental company only take credit/debit card details or do then actually charge the deposit when the customers pick up the car?
"If using a credit card to leave the deposit, the rental company will place a hold on it. This is not a charge and will not cause you to accrue interest. When using a debit card (when allowed) the deposit may be charged instead of just pre-authorized. If renting a car in a different currency than your bank account, this may mean that you may receive a slightly different amount at the end of the rental due to the currency conversion.
Can I take my rental car to the North Island?
Most rental companies in Christchurch allow you to visit the North Island, but there are different methods for this depending on the company. Some companies have locations on both sides of the Cook Straight and, therefore, require you to drop off your car in Picton and pick up a different one in Wellington. Other companies that don't have locations in these cities allow their cars to be taken on the ferries.
Can I rent a car at Christchurch Airport and return it in Queenstown or Auckland?
Yes, one-way rentals are possible, even to Auckland on the North Island (though you may have to switch vehicle when crossing the Cook Straight). There is an additional fee for this, but if you search using the location you'd like to drop the car off at, this fee will be included in the total cost.
Am I allowed to drive on beaches in New Zealand?
While there are some beaches that it is permissible to drive on, no rental company allows their cars to drive on a beach. Doing such will void your rental contract and any coverage you have which could lead to a hefty bill at the end.

With just six days on the South Island, we had to move fast. We kayaked on Lake Tekapo, hiked the Hooker Track at Mt. Cook, took an Air Safaris scenic flight over the glaciers of the Main Divide, swam with Hector's dolphins at Akaroa, and visited the breeding colony of Blue penguins at Flea Bay. What an amazing way to end the school holidays!

We loved exploring Christchurch after not being there since 2001. What a great city!!! Id highly recommend doing the tram trip on the first day to see where everything is and learn more about the city; love that it is hop-on-hop-off. Drove over Lewis Pass up to Westport from Hanmer. Beautiful drive through bush. Well worth it.
At Hanmer S had a massage at day spa and a dip in pools. Was disappointed with Hanmer as thought it didn't have the expected atmosphere. No soul.
Novatel Airport wow excellent dinner and accommodation.
Rental car fantastic and we thank Jay for the suggested upgrade.

We had Alphard people mover. We went from Christchurch airport heading for Lake Tekapo and Mt.Cook National Park, Queenstown and Arrowtown, Haast and Jackson Bay, then Lake Matheson at Fox Glacier, Hokitika Gorge, and Arthur's Pass. All are nature spots no one should miss once you are in South Island. Alphard functioned well throughout our trip. We were delighted that we had made good choice.

This was an unexpected commute home Christchurch to Westport (NZ) between two tour trips. It was made complicated by me contracting covid which resulted an unplanned isolation and a foreshortened hire of the car. When after driving long distance or up slope, burn smell is coming out from the engine. Worrying the engine will break down on the way, but luckily can return it without any problem.

It was a great experience. Except for Snap Rentals’ airport Shuttle is hopeless. They left us waiting and didn’t show up. Called them twice but only an automated voice recording answers. Another company’s shuttle saw us waiting close to an hour and offered to take us to pick up the car. Not considerate at all of travelers arriving from overseas trips and needing to get some sleep.

I drove from Christchurch to Tekapo via Geraldine. It was getting dark but it looked quite scenic after I turned off for Geraldine. I highly recommend staying at The Chalet at Tekapo. It's right on the lake, a few minutes walk from the old church. I saw spectacular sunrises over the lake. The hosts were friendly and helpful. The drive from Tekapo to Queenstown was beautiful as I drove past trees which were totally in frost at midday and I got amazing photos. The Novotel Lakeside in Queenstown was very good, perfectly located for the town centre. Vudu has yummy healthy food and Fergberger is a must do. I had a delicious venison burger.

Christchurch is still a pretty city with beautiful botanical gardens, in particular the rose garden, and the age of your old redwoods that date back to the 1800's. Trams ,galleries, museums all easily laid out in your city and really friendly. The south island of New Zealand is breathtakingly beautiful so give yourself time to really see and feel NZ and don't forget outside of the areas. Excellent service but car we rented should not have even been on the road or have a WOF as the fronts lights were fill with moisture & covers white/smokey screens & impossible to drive at night which hindered ability to go out at night 🙁

Stayed in Cathedral square and did not need a car. Picked up the car after we had two nights in Christchurch before we went travelling.
