Why has my payment been declined at DiscoverCars.com?

We know it’s incredibly frustrating to have a payment declined right as you’re finalizing your travel plans! The good news is that this is usually a very quick fix. Payments most commonly pause because of bank security blocks, a small typo, or a missing 3D Secure verification step.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1Verify Security Settings (3D Secure)

Check if your card uses 3D Secure. This usually sends a quick verification code to your phone or banking app. Keep an eye out for this prompt, as missing it can stop the payment from going through.

2Contact Your Bank

Because we’re an international travel site, your bank's automated security system might pause an unexpected foreign transaction just to protect you. A quick call to let them know "DiscoverCars.com" is a safe charge usually clears this right up!

3Try a Different Method

Sometimes it’s simply faster to try another payment option. We happily accept PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, and Revolut Pay, which often go through without a hitch.

4Check the Basics

It never hurts to double-check that your card number, CVV code, and expiration date are correct, and that you have enough funds or credit available for your trip.

Expectation:

"I have to use the exact same card to pay online that I will use at the rental desk."

Reality:

You can absolutely use a different card to book online! Feel free to use a family member's card, a debit card, or a digital wallet to secure your car. When you arrive at the rental desk, the Main Driver just needs to bring a physical credit card in their own name for the security deposit.

Expectation:

"My payment was declined, but my bank app shows you took the money. The website is broken!"

Reality:

If your booking didn't go through but you see a pending charge, we haven't actually taken any funds. This is just a temporary authorization hold placed by your bank while they processed the attempt. Since the booking didn't finalize, this hold will automatically drop off your statement within a few days.

What To Do Next:

If your card is still declining after checking with your bank, trying PayPal or Apple/Google Pay is a great next step. If you're still running into trouble, clearing your browser's cache, opening an Incognito window, or switching to a completely different browser often helps push things right through!
