The largest of the Balearic islands, Mallorca attracts visitors with its stunning Mediterranean beaches and fun nightlife. But while there’s no reason to undermine these two forms of relaxation, the island has plenty of more to offer, especially if you get a rental car to move around freely. These are four of Mallorca’s most intriguing attractions:

  • Palma. Located on the island’s southwestern coast, Palma is not only Mallorca’s main city and the location of the airport but also a place with an interesting history. From the stunning Bellver Castle (once the residence of Majorcan kings and later a military prison) to the Gothic Palma Cathedral which took nearly 400 years to finish, there are plenty of impressive buildings to marvel at. Meanwhile, art lovers will no doubt appreciate the Spanish Contemporary Art Museum that houses works of Picasso and Dali and the Joan Miro Foundation, a museum dedicated to the famous painter and sculptor who spent most of his life on the island. Additionally, The Royal Palace of La Almudaina, still an official royal residence, was once an Arabian fort and offers insight into the island's Moorish past.
  • Serra de Tramuntana. A surprisingly impressive mountain range taking up much of the northwestern portion of Mallorca, the Serra de Tramuntana is a great destination for a day trip from Palma. The R710 Motorway is one of the most scenic highland drives in all of Spain, and if you’re looking for something more active, you can follow one of the many hiking trails that weave past historic villages, medieval monasteries, and natural landscapes, offering stunning views of the sea below.
  • Castle of Capdepera. First built by Romans, then turned into a mosque by Moors, the Castle of Capdepera is a fascinating remnant of the presence of both these cultures’ time in Mallorca. Open to visitors and located near the easternmost point of the island, Capdepera is about a 70-minute drive from Palma. Other interesting attractions near it include the prehistoric settlement of Hospitalet Vell that predates the castle and the Caves of Drach, a fascinating underground lake, and a stalactite system that can be visited by boat.
  • Sóller. Being just a few kilometers from the coast, Sóller is known for its views of both the sea below and the stunning mountains that surround it. The agricultural village is known for its lemon and olive groves, as well as historical mansions, and a small, but interesting art museum. The drive from Mallorca Airport to Sóller takes only about 40 minutes.

We stayed in Cala D'or in Gavimor hotel , brilliant place and staff were excellent , driving there was easy but parking can be difficult , drivers are mad but then I have driven in all parts of the world so it is not a problem for me. We were early for our flight in palma so we decided to go to the "FAN" shopping centre which is 5 minutes from the airport and had a meal at Restaurant La Tagliatella. If you do get a chance this is a brilliant restaurant

Casual relaxing holiday, didn’t do much driving, some trips to restaurants and retail centres, but in general most driving was between hotel and airport, approx 1hr drive each way. A couple of trips to alternative beaches as well.

Having a car gave us the opportunity to visit places that had little or no access to public transport. Some of the roads were challenging. BUT the beauty and variety in the landscape made it worthwhile. Mallorca is one magical place. ❤️

Most of the island is accessible by public transportation. However, in a group and traveling with my elderly parent, a car was convenient. BE ADVISED! As Mallorca is an island, PARKING IS NOT CONVENIENT! Traffic was not too bad, but parking IS NOT CONVENIENT.

We drove a lot around the island on the even tiniest roads. As i am used to the wide roads and flat land in Kuwait, i was pretty stressed all the time driving, but because of the excellent car and the very disciplined drivers i made it without any problems Thanks God!!! We drove from Palma to Capdepera, Ses Salinas, Cala D'or, Homs caves, Artá, Port Soller, Deiá, Valdemossa, Beyanbufar, Cala S'Amarador and the National Park of Mondragó, Jardines d'Alfabia.Cala Ratjada. Santanayi.

I would recommend using this service, the process was good and quick. We had to tell your employees about damage of the car that was not described in the documentation (after our warning, the employee took photo of the damage and noted it to the documentation). Don’t worry to take some time before leaving rental park and focus on damage which is not documented. In general, the condition of car was good and we had no problem during our vacation.

Mallorca is a great island, with plenty of places to discover, some a bit hidden (Sa Calobra, Sa Foradada, Formentor, Cala Murta and plenty of other spots). So having or renting a car is a definite must. With Hiper Rent you really get great value for price: beeing located outside the airport (literally 3 minutes by shuttle), their price is lower than the other companies. But there is a big chance you get your car much faster than you would at the airport with the other companies: the shuttles run every 10-15 minutes and there is almost no waiting time at all once you get to the desk, compared to possible long waiting in the airport. All in all, I really recomand Hiper Rent and will use them again in the future

It's just easier to move from one place to the next one and come up with the road trip that most suits your needs and preferences. I totally recommend exploring the whole coastal perimeter of the island.

GOOD: car in good condition and return was fast and easy. BAD: Airport shuttle service was a *disaster*. Instructions for where to wait unclear. Called and asked where the shuttle would be, still unclear. When the shuttle did arrive, it was tiny everyone rushed over and filled up. This happened two more times, each time arriving in different location causing chaos. Eventually we just took a 15 euro taxi because we had already waited over 30 minutes and not made it inside the "complimentary shuttle".

Buses are very hap hazard and rarely keep to a timetable, roads are quite easy to follow although markings on minor roads need careful scrutiny, locals are always in a hurry and always tailgate although are not aggressive as this seems to be the norm.

Lovely drives, but be careful as white line in middle of road does not always say "room for two medium sized cars to pass, and no chance with a bus or large vehicle". Gutter to some roads is huge and going off tarmac could mean breakdown vehicle to get you back on road (did not happen to us, but be very careful)

Anybody can lie on the beach or pool, or sit in the bar or party the night away. You can do that anywhere in the world, but to see the people, to see the culture to see the real Mallorca, you have to go out and look. The island is about the size of Wales and not the distance between you and the next bar/pool/beach/or club so go and see for yourself!
