A mecca of nightlife and beach parties, Cancun is one of the tourist trademarks of Mexico. But while the city itself undoubtedly has lots to offer, getting a rental car will give you access to a number of other interesting destinations of the Yucatan peninsula. With that in mind, these are five of the most fun day trips from Cancun:
- El Rey. The state of Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located, is very rich in Mayan and other rarchaeological heritage, and while some of the most impressive sites are located a few hours’ drive away – more on those below – it is also possible to enjoy history without technically leaving Cancun. Located at the southern side of the city’s extensive Hostel Zone, the Ruins of the King are one of the early indigenous settlements from which Cancun originated and dates back to about 1,500 years.
- Chichen Itza. Located a good two-and-a-half-hour drive southwest of Cancun, Chichen Itza is nonetheless worth the long trip. The largest Mayan site in Mexico, this pre-Columbian city is best known for the impressive Pyramid of Kukulcan (also known simply as El Castillo) and its sculptures of feathered serpents, but the rest of the temples and sites are just as awe-inspiring.
- Cozumel. Another very popular tourist destination, the island of Cozumel is known for its beautiful coastline and as a hub of scuba diving and snorkeling, chiefly thanks to the reefs that surround it; the island is also home to the Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park and Arrecife Alacranes National Park (also called the Scorpion Reef). A drive south from Cancun takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes and includes a ferry, so ask your rental car provider in advance if they permit it.
- Sian Ka’an. One of the most beautiful nature areas in the region, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is known both for its diversity of flora and fauna and for its ecologically conscious tours. Made up of a tropical jungle, mangrove forests, and even a barrier reef, the area is home to unique wildlife species like kinkajous, ocelots, and coatis. There are tours you can join, but it’s possible to also visit the reserve independently, although, depending on the areas you want to access, you might need a 4x4 vehicle. The drive from Cancun takes about three hours. A trip to Sian Ka’an can be combined with a visit to Cozumel or to the nearby Mayan site of Tulum.
- Playa del Carmen. Another popular coastal resort, Playa, as it is often referred to by locals, is a more relaxed alternative to Cancun’s wild energy. Although still very busy, especially during the high season, it has a notably more laid-back vibe and is also known for its great diving spots. The drive from the Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen takes about 90 minutes.

Drove to Bacalar. It was so good to have the car to explore surrounding sites like the Ichkabal ruins, and the town of Mahahual. We stopped for two days in Tulum and loved the vibe, drive through the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve, and spent a wonderful afternoon at the Kantun-chi cenote park…incredible!

I spent most of my time in Playa del Carmen which is still relatively LESS overwhelmed with touristy developments.
Cancun is to be avoided as the opposite of the above, the Zona Hoteliera is a horrendous disfigurement of what must have been an incredibly nature-rich and beautiful peninsula.

Renting a car allowed us to visit local restaurants and stores, on top of saving money compared to use taxi or shuttle services between the airport and hotel. We stayed in playa Del Carmen, about 45 minutes from the airport. That round trip alone would cost more than our rental car. The driving experience is surprisingly easy, except for the speed bumps in the middle of the highways and on almost every local road just like many people warned about. People driving pretty slow (lower speed limits comparing to US), so no stress. Mexican police cars almost always leave their flashing lights on. It takes a while to get used to and don’t worry about being pulled over. We’ve seen a couple accidents and mostly involved with motorcycles. There’s rarely any four way stop signs (ALTO), so if you see a stop sign, definitely yield to the cross traffic. Don’t go off major highways, your rental can get dirty real quick and tires may get damaged in addition to the unexpected speed bumps (TOPE) that might send you flying. The most fun activities we had was cenotes and snorkeling in the lagoon. We also tried snorkeling in the open sea, and the wave was too rough that day, and we had to call for help and quit. Ecaret is fantastic and the show is a must-see. I highly recommend using discovercars.com and Localiza at Cancun airport based on my limited experience. Don’t know about other locations though. I do have a letter from my credit card company with rental insurance so I declined all additional offers. Localiza accepted my insurance after some push. That’s understandable. No drama about that. So, my conclusion is as long as you do your homework and be prepared, you can have an amazing experience explore Cancun area using a rental car. Best wishes and have fun!

El Cuyo was final destination and was amazing. Super chill vibe, great restaurants, houses to rent on or close to beach, kite surfing, wall climbing, sea shells everywhere and not very busy. Water was calm and shallow. Visited “5 Cenotes” and it was magical, super friendly staff. Played basketball in downtown area and beach volleyball. Kids will miss the beautiful beach, Naia Cafe, and La Negrita restaurant!

My vacation was in Tulum Mexico. The area is absolutely beautiful, and I will return again. This was my second time there and the ancient Mayan ruins, cenotes, beaches, and people were awesome. I do suggest that when you rent a car for remote locations, pay for the entire insurance package. Although the insurance was more expensive than the actual car rental, everything was covered from mechanical to body work. When you go for the upper end Insurance, you don’t have to leave a large deposit. Give yourself that piece of mind. You will be happy that you did.

Dos ojos cenote was a bucket list experience. The rest of our trip was very disappointing. Isla Mujeres was sweltering, loud and people hound you to buy things constantly. Tulum is overpriced and difficult. Puerto Morelos was pretty nice though. But loud, all-day construction noise every place we went. Unfriendly “hosts”, elevated prices. Felt like a “cash cow” most places we went. I speak Spanish and there was no language barrier. The rental car was one of the best parts of the experience, all went well and it was great to have a car.

We landed in Cancun mid afternoon and initially planned driving to Holbox directly. But last minute we opted for staying a night at Avani Airport hotel which was the best decision ever. Roads to Chiquila are not good for driving at night. Should be avoided at all costs. Our route with Holbox first and then Chichen Itza followed by Merida and the Valladolid in route to Tulum was perfect. Wouldn’t have done it the other way round.
It’s important to be aware of time differences between Cancun/Holbox/Tulum and Valladolid/Merida
