- Amphitheater. Dating back to the 2nd century AD, Cagliari’s Roman Amphitheater is unique because it was partially carved out of rock. Potentially housing 8,000 spectators, it remains one of the most impressive structures in the area despite being abandoned for more than 1,500 years. Fans of even more ancient history will also enjoy a visit to Tuvixeddu, a Punic necropolis.
- San Saturnino Basilica. Another ancient site that’s popular with tourists, this basilica dates back to the 5th century, making it one of the oldest churches on the island. It has been named after St. Saturninus, a Sardinian saint who was allegedly martyred for his faith.
- Poetto. Located on Sardinia’s southern coast, Cagliari is surrounded by many beautiful beaches. Many, like the famous Poetto Beach which is located along the sandy strip that separates the Mediterranean sea from a marshy lagoon, are located within the city limits, while others are easily accessible with a rental car.
- Cagliari Cathedral. We had 3 days to fill before meeting friends in Cagliari, so we travelled to Sant’Antioco, about 95km SW of Cagliari. This is a lovely small fishing village where we had an appartments overlooking the sea. Views changed constantly, from early morning sunrises to fishermen leaving and returning, selling their catch to the public, to evening lights. Due to a public holiday the street was closed off for a party complete with DJ, many food stalls and a fun fair which all added to the atmosphere. Great little restaurants and the potential of snorkelling trips if the water was a bit warmer. Overall a great 3 days in a slightly less touristy area.

My beautiful wife and I traveled from Cagliari to Villasimius to Cala Gonone to Bosa to Alghero to Sant’Antioco. Beaches, snorkeling, boat trips, sightseeing, multiple wineries and great food! Sardinia is awesome! The people are fantastic!

Nice country, beautiful ocean. No waste bins on beaches or public areas, no public toilets, some beaches are also dirty. All geared towards making money. Provinces are very quick to charge for parking, but can't supply basic services like bins and toilets. I come from a 3rd world country, and if you don't look after your beaches you will ultimately loose your tourists.

We drove from Cagliari to Portoscuso about an hour away to stay in a little fishing town with a beautiful beach. We also rented a boat there for the day and had a picnic on it, anchored in a cove.

Sardinia is wonderful but full of remote areas that are inaccessible without a car. The beaches are beautiful and the roads are good so it was a pleasure to drive. Minimal traffic and parking was ok even in Cagliari.
