The capital and largest city of Sardinia, Cagliari is also one of its main tourist destinations – and a gateway to the rest of the island. Here are some of the most interesting attractions in and around it:

• Poetto Beach. For thousands of visitors, Sardinia is all about the beach, and while the very best coastal stretches of the island are arguably to be found outside urban centers, there are also excellent options if you wish to stay closer to the big city. In Cagliari, arguably the best – and definitely most famous – beach is Poetto, an 8 km (5 mile) long, pale sand spit, part of which is made up of pay-to-use clubs, and another part which is open to the general public. A drive southeast of Central Cagliari takes only about 15 minutes. Poetto also borders the Molentargius - Saline Regional Park, an established, protected wetland.
• Basilica of San Saturnino. The construction of this small, but beautiful and very old church dates back to the early 6th century, not long after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. The Catholic house of prayer, which is now a popular landmark, but also continues to fulfil its original function, is named after Saint Saturninus, a 3rd century martyr and Cagliari’s patron saint.
• Tuvixeddu necropolis. Visiting an ancient burial ground may or may not be among your plans during a Mediterranean beach holiday, but this one makes a compelling case for its inclusion. Sardinia in general was home to one of the earliest European civilizations, and the island is littered with prehistoric ruins, megaliths, and other sites of interest. This one, located a short drive west of the city center, is relatively recent as it dates back to around 2,500 years ago when it was established by the Carthaginians who ruled the area at the time. Nowadays, the art, pottery, and general ambience of the site make it a popular tourist destination.

Brent and Sixt have hire desks in the airport's arrivals hall. Other hire companies have locations in the car park in front of the airport. A few companies offer a meet and greet or shuttle service to their location just away from the airport.

Services and facilities

You can dine in a sit-down restaurant, a pastry shop, a fast food restaurant, or a wine bar. There are also cashpoints, a currency exchange, and a number of stores, some of them offering local Sardinian products. You’ll also find a lost and found office, a pharmacy, first aid service, and a chapel.

Nearest petrol station

If approaching the airport from the city, then an Eni petrol station along SS130 is the best place to fill up before returning your car. If approaching from the north, you probably would want to exit and one exit before the airport and make your way to a Q8 station on Viale Cagliari.
