Cagliari Airport is the main airport on the island of Sardinia, serving its capital Cagliari. It is a popular destination for many, including Brits. Though there are not a lot of direct flights from the UK, it is easy to connect through Milan or Rome to reach it.
Tolls: There are currently no toll roads on Sardinia. However, there are ZTL zones in the centre of the islands largest cities, and it is forbidden to enter these zones unless authorized (like a being a resident of a building in the zone). Make sure to avoid entering these zones to avoid any fines that the hire company will definitely pass on to you.
Taking a hire car to the mainland: Most hire companies at Catania Airport allow their cars to be taken between Sardinia and mainland Italy. Usually, travellers make this a one-way trip (that is, not returning to Sardinia or not returning to the mainland). There is an additional fee for this, though it is not large percentage-wise if hiring a car for a week or more. You can search for the location where you would like to drop off the car and the extra fee will be included in the total prices.
One-way rental between Sicily and Sardinia may not be available by the specific hire company you choose. And if they are, the fee is significantly higher than travelling to the mainland.

We collected car from Caligari airport and stayed first night in the capital. We had not driven abroad before, the only issue we had was the sat nav which took us the longest, most inappropriate routes in the city. We then went on a 3 hr journey to the north of Sardinia which was fabulous. Even the motorway was quiet and the views were amazing. Having the car made a huge difference to the holiday and we would definitely do it again.
