Ilha Verde at Ponta Delgada Airport

Pros: Friendly agent, car in good shape, easy return process

Cons: Took a long time waiting in line to get car on arrival. Also pre-arrival checkin did not work - unable to submit info kept getting error messages despite trying multiple times.

Pros: Very convenient, as they are at the terminal.

Cons: Pick up speed could be greatly improved. There were two desks but they both had long queues. More agents at the desks would alleviate this situation at busy times.

Pros: Absolutely nothing. They are the worst I have ever seen.

Cons: Then they gave me the car without proper handoff and without assessing the pre-existing damage together. The pre-existing damage report was clean. They do not encourage the customer to check anything, so they can later blame them for pre-existing damage. When I brought back the car, no one wanted to check anything, close the agreement and relese the deposit. They said they did not have time and would do it later without me. When I tried to take pictures, the staff attacked me.

Cons: I first went to the first Ilha Verde counter and was told to go to the other Ilha Verde counter. After waiting for an extended period of time, it was finally my turn but then was told to go back to the first counter that I was at initially. For the drop-off of the car, my flight was departing at 6:30 AM and I had to wait until 5:30 AM to return the car so that that I would not be charged an additional 31.65 Euros for the early drop-off of the car.

They nickel and dime you for documents, they charged for gas even though the tank showed full and they went off estimated KM remaining, and they lied about new damages by saying our photos were not clear enough and compared the current state of the car to photos they had when the car was new YEARS ago. Horrible human beings.

Pros: Pick-up at Ponta Delgada Airport was quick, and the car (Ford Puma) was in good condition. When I had a flat tire and damaged rim during the rental, their assistance was responsive and I was given a replacement car reasonably quickly.

Cons: A few things worth flagging: there was no spare tire in the trunk. At pick-up, staff pushed their own insurance even after I mentioned I already had external full coverage. The repair cost for my flat tire seemed high — €240 for the tire alone, noticeably more than retail prices. When I requested the invoice for my insurance claim, I was initially sent someone else's invoice by mistake (quickly corrected once flagged). The security deposit (€1600) was high.

Cons: 1. They were not helpful regarding the pickup time. Agent said that it was booked through a 3rd party(Discover). I initially did not realize that Discover was a 3rd party provider. If I had I would never have booked the vehicle.

Pros: Overall, all representatives from the counter, pick-up and drop-off were very friendly and helpful. The process is fast and there is not too much confusing paperwork to go through.

Cons: It is not clear that the additional coverage is from DiscoverCars and not from Ilha Verde directly. So when we checked in they said we only have the basic coverage which was not true. It would be clearer if all parties were aware of the coverage applied to avoid confusion. Otherwise, the service was great!

Cons: Personnel at check out could not explain policies for minor damage that could happen with the car and or policies regarding damage such as difference between scratch on plastic vs metal, etc.

Pros: I did not like the serve at all. We waited 45 min in a short line, the service providers were curt, they did not explain the pick up information or drop off services. We had to find the car without any assistance. We did not take pictures of the car but did notice it wasn't clean. We were discovered that we had just over a half a tank. When we returned the car, they told is we had $450 of damages. We had no incidents with the the car but since we didn't have their insurance, we had to pay .

Pros: There are a lot of negative reviews on Google so I was worried, but in the event the hire was fine and service good. No concerns.

Pros: They offered an electric car, which is my preference. The car was well equipped. I also liked the fueling policy, where I was allowed to return the car uncharged with no extra fees. I like the pre-paid charging card, although it was not clear where the card is authorized and where it is not.

Cons: Due to good offers, the check-in office was rather crowded, and at check-out, we also had to wait a bit. The car itself was good, but apparently, it had been used by a smoker, which made the air in the interior unpleasant. Next time, I would also appreciate a bigger traction battery. This one required frequent charging, and sometimes it was a challenge to find a charger that accepts the card. Surprisingly, some Galp chargers did not accept the card, while some other providers accepted the card.

Also, I was sent an email to check in early for our car pickup but after going through all of the steps (entering personal info, passport #, drivers license #, etc.) there was an error message saying that the driver's license was not authorized to drive this type of vehicle. When we got to the pick up place, there were no issues so I don't know why there was an issue when doing it online.

Pros: This was one of the best car rental experiences I've ever had. All Ilha Verde staff with whom I interacted were professional, friendly, and honest. There were no attempts to upsell or engage in any other shady practices that are common in the car rental industry, such as trying to charge a customer for pre-existing damage or add previously undisclosed charges. The car was in great condition.

Cons: For car drop off I had to take the paperwork back to the terminal building. When I got there it was a large line. I never had to wait to drop off a car like that. Eventually I asked and they took my paper but you should improve this process as people have to go catch a flight and can’t be waiting to drop off a piece of paper.

The car had issues for example the electronic system blacked out with apple car play as we were driving and could not be reset while driving and we got lost.

Pros: I’ve been renting from Ilha Verde for over 10 years and the process for pickup and return has definitely improved. 15 minutes or so each way, with friendly and helpful associates.

Cons: This time around the car was in fair/poor condition. Filthy windshield interior, poor wipers, and worn interior upholstery/touchpoints. I got a low tire pressure light within the first day and discovered some tires were overinflated and some were way under. I don’t really mind the cars age, but they should be better cleaned. Between the condition and mileage it felt like maybe this car was ready for retirement. However it did the job and got us around the island safely.

Cons: I rented a compact SUV and they gave us a Mazda 2 - a mini car. When I asked about getting the correct size, they said it was the correct size (a Mazda 2 is not a compact SUV, a Mazda cx3 or cx5 size is the car I expected) and could do nothing about it. We liked the car but it was not what we rented nor a good price for that small of a car.

Pros: Due to the delay of flight we missed our connecting flight and arrived to Azores 5 hours later. They were very nice and waited for us even after opening hours to pick up the car. The deal was quick.

Pros: Hub caps kept coming off for no reason. Had to buy 2 new ones and take the rest off. Had to do an oil change as light came on saying it needed to be changed. Middle seat very hard to pull up to get people in the back seat. Back door does not stay open slammed and shut on my hip. Another service light came on as well. I called multiple times and no one ever answered.

Pros: Finding the agent in the airport was fairly easy, however, I would advise to request your car pick up for two hours prior to your actual arrival as I was unable to acquire the car immediately. Our flight arrived early and the car was delayed, and therefore there was a long waiting period.

Cons: The booking said Discover Car but the desk is ILHA. So we had to ask around to find the desk. Our car was booked at 8 am and when we got there at 7:15 am they were not willing to give us car 45 min earlier (never happened in any other country). At drop off we got papers to bring back to the desk which should have been done by the staff. We waited in line for 30 min just to find out there is another desk 50 feet further where you drop papers off. Thay desk had only one person who was not there.

Pros: Pick up was easy, was recommended a SUV instead of what I originally had reserved since we were 3 adults with suitcases. Also recommended Diesel so it's easier on gas. Service was really nice and professional. Had to replace car twice, replacement was done quickly without any issues.

Cons: The first vehicle allocated was terrible. It had external scratches all over it. There was a fault light on as soon as I drove it out of the compound and loss of power. I returned it straight away and insisted on a different vehicle

I try to reach the Ilha Verde during the night through several phone numbers, chat and nobody answer… I arrived at João Paulo II airport at 4:30am and nobody to receive us, no Drop off Box to put the keys, anything. Is the only company who doesn’t work with Drop off Box, but it should, because these unforeseen events, or at least pick up the phone 24h.

Cons: There was quite a back up of people waiting for cars when we landed. One or two more staff members to help with the check in would have been appreciated.

Pros: Our first car made a noise while driving that we did not like and trust. So we drove back to the rental company the next day and explained the issue. No discussion necessary: we got apologies and a other, newer car. Good service!
