The heart of the ‘heel’ of Italy, Brindisi is one of the most popular destinations in the south of the country. As known for its unique traditions as it is for a stunning coastline, the Salento peninsula, where Brindisi is located, has something for every visitor. These are some of its most interesting surroundings:
- Santa Maria del Casale. Built during the 13th century by Prince Philip of Taranto, this is one of the most notable churches in the region. Its outer appearance showcases a transition from Romanesque to Gothic, incorporating elements of both styles, while inside you’ll find many impressive religious frescoes and buildings. The church is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- Beaches. One of the best things about Southern Italy is the region’s coastline, so it’s good news for any visitor to Brindisi that the city is surrounded by a number of stunning beaches. The most popular ones can be found by traveling north along the coast towards Ostuni (the town itself is inland, but a number of beaches also called by that name are about a 20-40 minute drive from Brindisi), though there are also lovely spots as you travel south along Italy’s “heel”.
- Lecce. Sometimes called the Florence of the South, Lecce is one of the most beautiful cities in this part of the country. Best known for its many Baroque buildings and well-preserved city center, it is also home to several Ancient Roman sites. Located just a 30-minute drive south of Brindisi, it is definitely worth a visit.
- The region of Puglia. Puglia (or Apulia in Italian) surrounding Brindisi, is known for its enchanting towns that exude character and charm. These include towns such as Ostuni, that is known as the "White City," and perched on a hill, adorned with narrow, winding streets all painted in bright white. Alberobello is one of the most famous in the region thanks to its unique Trulli houses, traditional Apulian dry stone huts with a conical roof, and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Polignano a Mare is another often photographed location. It offers breathtaking sea views with its dramatic cliffs and caves, and it's a sought-after destination for those looking to experience Puglia's stunning coastline. These towns, among others in the region, provide a captivating glimpse into southern Italy's rich culture, history, and natural beauty.

Overall very good. Although one must be aware that sometimes even navigation may lead you to very very narrow streets in the old towns of the south of Italy:) So prefer smaller car over any bigger ones - mine Citroen C3 had perfect size for that job.

We visited some nice places, but Porto Cesareo and the entire Torre Lapillo are disgusted. The is no bin on the road, everything is is thrown at random, no one cleans and collects the trash, the municipality does not have any dumpsters on the side of the street and there is no collection on the beach or in the city. there is no garbage collection company and the garbage is left on the side of the street. it's disgusting!!!

What I felt that south of Italy is less crowded and peaceful as compared to other big cities in Italy. During the trip I went to historical places in Ostuni, Alberobello and Matera and then spent a couple of days at the beach on the west coast. Both were memorable experiences and I loved it.

Our itinerary involved discovering the sights of Solento and Puglia from an Agriturismo Airbnb base accommodation. Vehicle hire was the obvious choice but the in car GPS (added to the hire) wasn't picking up the locations we entered so we used google maps instead and used a lot of mobile roaming data instead. The GPS addition was a waste of money.

We toured Puglia stay a few days in 4 locations and 4 & 5 days in two more. We had a lovely time but these are the things to note. Parking in lots of historical towns is almost impossible. One we visited and wanted to spend money in we drove around for over an hour looking for a parking space or car park, but there were none. So the town of Nardo missed out on around €200 of income. We visited between the 19th of June and the 4th of July and the beaches were packed. I don't mean busy I mean so packed that the four of us could'nt find enough space to put 4 towels down together. We did rent sunbeds but these were uncomfortable and stupid money, at least €18 a day some €23.5. We ended up going to inland hotels with pools and that worked out slightly more expensive but far far nicer.

From Puglia we then traveled to the Amalfi Coast for a few days, dropped the cars at Naples (not where we rented them, but no issue) and trained into Rome for our last few days. Loved the people, food, great restaurants, tourist sites and all of Italia. Ciao!!

We visited amazing cities like Matera, Lecce, Alberobello. We enjoyed the Adriatic Sea in Polignano a Mare, Monopoli and the Jonic sea in Gallipoli. The sanctuary in Leuca was a fantastic surprise. Best of all, the people and the gastronomy. Good accommodation at a good price
