Airport travel guide

Situated in the heel of Italy’s boot, the coastal town of Brindisi attracts thousands of beach-loving tourists every year. But while the Adriatic beaches of the region are undoubtedly splendid, southern Italy also has plenty of history, nature, and character to offer. With that in mind, here are three ideas for day-trips around Brindisi:
- Matera. The capital of the neighbouring Basilicata province, Matera is best known for its unique settlements known as sassi. Meaning simply ‘stones’ in Italian, they are caves, rooms, and even churches cut into limestone rock. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the Sassi have been collectively recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On a more recent note, Matera was also the European Capital of Culture in 2019. Located about 135 km (84 miles) west of Brindisi, Matera can be reached by car in about 1 hour and 50 minutes.
- Lecce. While Brindisi itself is not short on splendid architecture, checking out the neighbouring city of Lecce should be on the list of any lover of history and art. Known as the Florence of the south, the city was once home to ancient Greeks but is now best known for its intricate baroque buildings like the Holy Cross Church, Lecce Cathedral or Duomo, and the Church of San Giovanni Battista. Located 40 km (25 miles) from Brindisi, Lecce is just half an hour’s drive south.
- Alta Murgia National Park. A large national park made up of grasslands, valleys, and forests, Alta Murgia is one of the nicest scenic areas in southern Italy. In addition to diverse flora and fauna, the region is also famous for landmarks like the Castel del Monte palace, unique rock formations, and even dinosaur footprints. The nearest corner of the national park is less than a two-hour drive from Brindisi.
