Perhaps the most famous island to the west of the Greek mainland, the virtues of Corfu are no secret to an international traveler. From classical and medieval heritage to scenic nature and gorgeous beaches, there are plenty of reasons to visit. These are five of Corfu’s most interesting attractions:
- Liston. The neighborhood best known for its architecture is located at one end of Spianada, the iconic square of Corfu Town. Unique to Greece, many buildings in it were built at the beginning of the 19th century during the very brief period of the Napoleonic rule of the Ionian islands — they are said to be aimed to imitate the architecture of the famous Rivoli street of central Paris.
- Lefkimmi. There are many famous beaches in Corfu, such as Sidari and Agios Stefanos, usually known for the busy resorts that surround them, but if you’re looking for a bit more peace and quiet, head to the village of Lefkimmi in the southern part of the island. Known for its calm waters and relaxed atmosphere, its sandy beaches are just a 45-minute drive from Corfu Town.
- Monasteries. Although just a short drive away from either coast, the interior of Corfu remains unexplored by most foreign visitors. If you feel like getting off the beaten track, one of the best ways to do that is to explore the many Greek Orthodox monasteries that can be found in the inland area of the island. Often located in spectacularly hilly settings, they also offer important lessons about the history and culture of Corfu — one good example is the abandoned Saint Paraskevi monastery located on the edge of Vikos Gorge, just a 20-minute drive southwest of Corfu Town.
- Lakones. A charming hilltop village on the eastern coast of Corfu, its traditional stone houses date back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
An old donkey trail connects Paleokastritsa with Lakones and offers a well-marked path through the woodlands. The views over the Ionian from Lakones are some of the best on the island. - Nymfes. Located in the heart of the island’s northern interior, the highland village is known for its lush greenery, springs, and waterfalls; it is this serene scenery that probably attracted the water nymphs who give the settlement its name. While no sightings of the legendary maidens can be guaranteed, the 50-minute drive from Corfu Town is nonetheless worth the effort.

Best customer service, I had someone with my name at the airport waiting for me, the car was right outside the terminal. I rent cars a lot, mainly from the big car rental companies. This was a small company and I have to say by far the best I have ever had. I am highly recommending them. Corfu is a great island that has to be explored by car. Corfu is a very interesting place and a car is essential if you want to explore the island. Many of the secondary roads are very narrow and contain numerous blind corners and confidant local drivers. There are also numerous potholes and sections of road that have succumbed to the adjacent beach. This shouldn't detract from your holiday in any way, but caution is advised. If you take the time to explore, the scenery will be worth the effort.

Don't rent anything bigger than you need, some of the roads are extremely narrow particularly in the mountain villages. Stayed in Acharavi in the north where, surprisingly, there is a huge beach about a mile long, sandy and child friendly but virtually undeveloped. No high rise buildings, just a few villas and small beach resorts. The drive over the mountains to get there is spectacular. Nice local town, lots of bars and restaurants.

Renting a car makes it easier and cheaper to get around Corfu so that you can see more of the Island but a lot of the roads are in very bad condition and you have to drive on the wrong side of the road at times to miss very bad parts which can be dangerous with coaches and lorries coming towards you .

If you are driving in Corfu , the roads in the country , are narrow , no lighting , and lots of places with no white lines, Google maps get you lost . If you are going to kavos , find a good driver ( not nutter or someone who drives too slow or someone who brakes too hard on every bend) and pace them , till you get to know the road.

A very pretty, green and scenic island but it’s very expensive and you are constantly over-charged for food, drinks, clothing and groceries. The garbage was not collected at all and was left in stinking piles on the every corner of the street. Very unpleasant.
