Ten of the Most Haunted Roads in Europe

Foggy mountain road winding through a forest with a car in the distance.
Halloween is just around the corner, which means it's officially the time of year where all things spooky and frightening get their spotlight. To get into the spirit, our team here at global car rental comparison site DiscoverCars.com have looked through local online forums and social media posts to identify and narrow down ten of the most haunted roads in Europe, complete with the harrowing tales and urban legends associated with each spooky road. Are you brave enough to continue reading?

Staatsstrasse 2080, Ebersberg Forest, Bavaria, Germany

Misty dirt path winding through dense fog-covered forest tree
First up in our list of most haunted roads is Staatsstrasse 2080, a road in Ebersberg, Germany, that’s infamous for its ghostly sightings of the “White Woman of Ebersberg Forest”. This area in Bavaria has an incredibly eerie past and is known for its spooky ghost sightings that predate the internet. The story goes as follows: drivers in the area would report picking up a young woman in white on the side of the road next to a nearby chapel. The woman would get into the car, only to completely disappear shortly after, spooking the people who offered help.

Here’s a harrowing account we found of one person’s encounter with the white woman of Ebersberg forest. We found this account on a forum, where it’s specified that the person who experienced this sighting was a police officer who regularly patrolled the area. Like many stories go, the policeman spotted a woman in white on the side of the road and stopped to pick her up. The woman got into the back of the car, where the policeman made conversation as he continued to drive, but was met with silence. After checking his rearview mirror, the man was stunned to find the woman missing!

We found that there have been plenty of images and recordings of people claiming to have encountered this spirit, making it one of the most haunted roads in all of Europe.

A616 Stocksbridge Bypass, South Yorkshire, England

Next on our list is the A616 Stocksbridge Bypass in South Yorkshire, north of Sheffield in England, United Kingdom. The Stocksbridge Bypass is a road notorious for its ghostly apparition sightings, and is said to be built on or near the ruins of an old monastery. According to online forums, many drivers have reported over the years spotting ghostly children and medieval monks on the side of the road when passing through.

We found a particularly spooky account of one of these sightings on Sheffield Forum, which described two police officers' terrifying experience on this road. The police officers were parked on the side of the road when they noticed two apparitions on either side of their vehicle staring back at them. They were apparently so scared that they ended up taking time off work to recover from the traumatising encounter.

This story is just one out of hundreds of replies to the forum post about this road. The forum and its replies have garnered over 105,000 views on the thread over the past 20 years, making this road one of the UK’s most haunted.

If you’re thinking about exploring the UK yourself, this country came in fourth place on our list of easiest countries to drive in!

Kinmount Straight on the A75, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

winding road through green hills with mountains under cloudy sky
This section of the A75 has a reputation for being one of the most haunted roads in the whole of Scotland. The Kinmount Straight is known in the trucking industry to be a particularly creepy stretch of road, as many have reported seeing apparitions around this area. Some truckers in the community chalk these ghostly sightings up to the general eeriness of the area, combined with mind tricks from physical and mental exhaustion of driving long hours; however, others argue against this.

We found a story on social media from a Facebook post where one commenter described their eerie experience on this road. They mention passing an old, ruined castle and suddenly hearing a loud bang. After checking their rearview mirrors, the driver saw that the rods attached to their roof rack were somehow in the middle of the road, which seemed impossible to have happened, as nothing had broken

Blue Bell Hill, Kent, England

empty wet road disappearing into thick fog over open fields
Blue Bell Hill in Kent has a spooky urban legend similar to that of the woman in white in Ebersberg forest. This road in Kent is said to be haunted by another phantom hitchhiker, who, once let into the car, becomes disoriented and eventually disappears into thin air.

We found one spine-chilling story from a Redditor online who describes their friend’s experience, who allegedly encountered a spirit that haunts this road. The story we found begins when a police officer is driving home from work and notices a woman on the side of the road looking lost and confused. The man stops his car and lets the woman in, where she appears disoriented but happy to chat. Suddenly, the conversation comes to an abrupt end, and the man looks behind him to see that the woman has vanished, as if she had never been there at all. Locals call this spirit the ghost of Blue Bell Hill. Spooky!

D7 Caen to Luc-sur-Mer, Calvados, Normandy, France

Mont Saint-Michel rising from the misty tidal flats at dawn with a dirt path leading toward it
The next haunted road is located in the Normandy region in France. This road is also said to be haunted by another hitchhiking woman, similar to the sightings in Germany and the UK. There have been sightings of ‘La Dame Blanche’, a woman dressed in white who becomes erratic once seated in the car, warning drivers to be careful. It’s said that a young woman might have tragically died in a car accident here in the 1970s.

According to what we found on a French forum page, there have been reports of the woman appearing calm and composed, only to become panicked at the entrance to Luc-sur-Mer, where she shrieks, “Be careful, the bend is treacherous!” before disappearing.

This haunted stretch of road is less than a two-hour drive from Rouen, a city in our top ten spooky cities ranking.

This next haunted road can be found in Przylek, Poland, where there have been many stories of paranormal activity reported on this stretch of road. This road in particular is said to have a complex past, with sightings of a ghostly little girl and a soldier being two common apparitions.

This road, as well as the surrounding area around the N25, is a common topic on online ghost-story forums in Ireland. We found that this particular area may be haunted by the ghost of an old man who you can see stepping into the road, only to disappear moments later. We found that there have been many sightings of this old man, who is described as having a “bent” posture, and many even want others not to venture out onto this stretch of road at night, presumably so you don’t encounter this spirit!
