First a river fort, then a castle, and nowadays a fascinating astronomical observatory and museum, Blackrock is one of the most interesting places to visit in Cork. The impressive construction was initially built in the 16th century to protect Cork from pirate attacks. The drive to reach it from the city center takes just a few minutes.
- Killarney National Park. As much as Ireland is about its folklore, music, and pub culture, it is also characterized by its landscape. Made up of lakes, hills, bogs, and woodlands, Killarney National Park is one of the best places to enjoy Ireland’s nature in this part of the country. Inhabitants of the park include red deer, grey herons, and white-tailed eagles. One of the best day trips from Cork, Killarney can be reached in about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
- Mizen Head. A spectacular scenic road on the Wild Atlantic Way. Famous because you can drive along narrow roads on the Mizen Peninsula, while overlooking a gorgeous cliff. - Dingle Peninsula. This stunningly beautiful destination offers plenty of activities to keep you entertained. Drove Ring of Kerry over 2 days then to Galway pick up in Cork. Recommend you get full coverage if you are from US as the driving on left side, coupled with tighter roads and Ireland drivers who drive fast because they are used to the roads...etc makes for you brushing against bushes quite frequently if you are making this drive.

Beara is a wonderful peninsula. Many flowers in july/august. Lots of prehistoric artefacts scattered around.
Dzogchen Beara, a tibetan buddhist retreat centre with a near finished temple, a beautiful tranquil spot, Healy pass is quite spectacular, to drive through, Derreen gardens is lovely, and in many areas one can do loop tours.

Great airport to pick up car. You can walk to the car with no need for shuttle bus. Cork airport is small, this would not be possible in larger airport.
