Take the main national roads - highways and expressways.
As for the rest of the roads - they are in terrible condition and the journey is very long, as you often have to really slow down and watch out for potholes in the road.

Leaving Tirana, we crossed into Kosovo, making our first stop in Pristina. After a mere 1-2 hours, it became clear the city wasn't a good fit for us – a sprawling metropolis that didn't spark our interest. Prizren, however, was a delightful surprise. Its enchanting old town, alive with cafes and restaurants, instantly charmed us, and we decided to stay the night. The drive back to Tirana included a quick coffee in Durres, but the journey's true test came upon entering the capital. We were immediately ensnared in a monstrous traffic jam, losing over an hour before reaching our hotel. The sheer intensity of Tirana's traffic chaos forced us to reconsider our plans, leading us to cancel our day trip to Berat and explore Tirana further instead.

If you are planing to visit Albania by yourself with rented car, dont’t be surprised that you may get a car with problems , which would be able to drive only flat road, no hils. I strongly suggest to buy full coverage insurance, because Albanians are not careful drivers.

We had a great stay in Albania. Over a 1000km driven. Tirana - Vlore - Ksamil - Telepene - Berat - Shkodra - Durres - Tirana. A very diverse Country. So are the prices. We tried to also stop in smaller villages to find more traditional places and food.
