If u planning to go from the canyon or girokaster to ksmail, the drive is stunning but will be twice as long in a small car, def worth hiring a 4 x4 to go the shorter route.

Albania is not the easiest place to drive. You need to be confident and aggressive and understand there is no etiquette. Cities are very congested but outside these the roads are straight and easy

Tutto sommato il viaggio è andato bene, ma guidare in Albania e parcheggiare può essere difficoltoso. Condizioni dell’asfalto pessime, tantissime buche e tratti non asfaltati. Devi guidare con la massima concentrazione e devi aspettarti di tutto. Nelle località turistiche più rinomate hanno costruito una infinità di case e palazzi ma non c’è dove lasciare la macchina.
Forse meglio auto media piccola.

We drove to Berat and had a day looking around with lunch at the castle. The Blue Eye was a highlight and the drive to it was beautiful. We drove back up the coast to Titana and the scenery and beaches are beautiful.

During my 8-day trip to Albania, I had some fantastic experiences that truly showcased the country's charm. In Berat, I was mesmerized by the historic Ottoman houses and the stunning views from the Berat Castle. Vlore offered beautiful beaches and the serene Karaburun Peninsula, perfect for nature lovers. In Saranda, I enjoyed the crystal-clear waters and vibrant nightlife, while a visit to the ancient city of Butrint was a fascinating dive into history. Durres surprised me with its lively boardwalk and delicious seafood at local restaurants. Overall, Albania's blend of history, natural beauty, and welcoming people made it an unforgettable journey.

Great drive from Tirana to Sarande/Ksamil along the coast and then returning via Gjirokaster, amazing views all the way. As a solo traveller with little driving experience I found driving in cities such as Vlore and Sarande quite challenging, relying only on Google maps to find the way, and the streets are narrow and hilly, with tight spaces and traffic coming from all sides. Apart from that it was a pleasant drive and a great adventure overall.

I had a great time as I was with my family. I went to the sea side of Albania, Vlorë and Orikum. Very beautiful and a very cosmopolitan city. I am sure all who goes to Albania passes through Vlorë to go further down south and trust me you will very much enjoy it. The restaurants are so many, and the food it's fresh, tasty and the prices are low. I went to the south east side of Albania, Përmet, also the food was great, very tasty. Knowing the language helped me communicate with locals more and it was very easy for me.

Albania is a beautiful country with the most friendly people who are keen to help strangers. Tirana felt very safe and we had no problems there. I found the Bradt guide on Albania very informative and worthwhile studying for planning purposes. On a negative, Albania's beauty is blighted by litter.

Visit Albania, beautiful country, polite people. Maintain the speed limit as it requires on the road. Respect other road users. Give yourself plenty of time to travel, don't ever rush. Places aren't going anywhere, they'll be waiting for you to visit.

Don't speed, ever, follow the road instructions and respect other people on the road. There's no need to rush to go places. You are late or not, places are still there, they don't go anywhere! Drive patiently and enjoy! Albania is a country growing for the better.

The Albanian Drivers are an intersting Lot. It seems that the bigger your car is the more entitled to the road you are. Rentng a Skoda Fabia meant we hadto drive defensively and always be on the alert for someone overtaking towards you on a blind corner. Thankfully we never encounterred any, but we certainly saw several insane manouvres going in the same direction as we were.

I visited mainly flat land areas, although this was 1.6 Littre engine, and very economical car, it was not so great going up hill but can still manage in 1st gear. Visiting rural areas was very good for a family with plenty of space. If you plan going up steep country roads, I'd go for a 2.2 Littre engine.
